Dave400ex

Borich is awesome. A lot of the GNCC guys are good at MX. I know Ballance isn't bad. They should have a MX race for all the GNCC racers and a XC race for the GNC racers. That would be cool to do a switched race and see who is better.

Extremeracer167
11-19-2002, 03:18 PM
Well i believe Jones, Farr, and Ellis have already proved to be super fast in the GNCCs. And im sure a few others have also. Ballance is very fast on MX, Jeff seegot was also incredibly fast on the MX track also. it would be interesting!

lets not kid ourselves, lets see you hit a double were the take off is 10ft high the gap is 60-70ft, and you cant see the lading till your 20ft in the air.
i think its a little easier to dodge tree's all you gotta down is slow down if it gets a little hairy.

86atc250r
12-17-2002, 03:25 PM
I race both woods and MX... I've landed jumps well in excess of 70' countless times, and believe me, once you race in the woods and you'll gain a whole new respect for trees, rocks, ruts, and even deer......

After a while 70' gaps at the MX track become quite routine & you can size up what it's going to take to clear the jump by just eye-balling it.

Blasting thru an unfamiliar 5 to 10 mile course every race at warp speed with your front tires sometimes less than inches from trees that are not going to move if you hit them can be equally as challenging and sometimes equally as dangerous.

Luckily, I've never been at an XC race where a death occurred, but I have been at several where people were either airlifted out or taken to the ER via ambulance.

I guess what it boils down to is if you're flying thru the air 20' up and 70+' long over doubles and triples, you are not at the novice level... If you ride an equally aggressive level in the woods, the dangers can be equally as great.

Excellent point. You may think of it as just racing through some woods but when it comes down to it, its not as safe as it looks. If you think about it the danger is pretty much equal between the too.

mehh, i just know its scray to break down in the middle of an xc race cuz ya gotta pull off for 2 hours and hope you can get towed back, i havent broke down , but i bent a tie rod bad enough that i couldnt stay on the trail at any speed, but thats my fault, and it was all fenced off so i couldnt cut through to get back to the truck i had to take the trail.:(

I think for someone to say that XC isnt as challenging as MX, they are throwing out a bunch of BS, and prob. have never entered in a XC race. Now ive never raced a National MX, but i have raced a few local MXs. But im NOT a MXer, i race the GNCC series. Personally i thought the 15-20 minute moto was a joke. I was just geting warmed up when they threw the checkered flag. Lets see all of you guys that think XC isnt as tough as MX go 2 + hours as fast as u can. And then tell us how much harder MX is. Ive seen sooo many of you "fast" MX guys huffing and puffing after a decent battle with another rider for 20 min. And for some reason u guys think that a XC race is a leasurely ride through the woods. U will know what its like to be truley beat and exhaust after a XC race. Not just out of breath. So to any of you guys that think MX is so much more demanding then XC, stop talkin the BS and get out there and race one:rolleyes:

if you werent tired after doing a moto of mx then you werent going that fast buddy.
i NEVER said XC was easy or not scary or dangerous.i know its just as brutal.
i just said that i think its a little more scairy tryin to jump a 70ft double then ridin past trees, of course the faster you go the more chance that if you hit a tree your gonna be screwed, but you can always slow down. when your jumpin you either make it or get hurt pretty bad.

gabe as far you saying how demandin xc is i agree, but just how you say hitting a big jump gets routine an equally talented xc rider should think going through trees is routine., not all mx tracks are the same, just like xc tracks.

86atc250r
12-18-2002, 02:07 PM
Just like in XC, where if you don't mind losing, you can "just slow down" - the same can be said for MX, if you don't mind losing, you have the option of rolling the jump - it's the same difference.

As far as not all MX tracks being the same, that's obvious, but typically MX tracks run practice during the week, the day before the race, and typically the day of the race - in many XC races, you have only the option of walking the course.

Maybe you should try competing at an XC race sometime & see how easy it is to "just slow down".

It's easy to say from the outside looking in, but there's many instances where you're every bit as committed as the guy hitting the 70' double - sometimes more so & you don't have the option of "just slowing down".

QuadRacer041
12-18-2002, 02:17 PM

i was just giving my opinion, i dont want to have a debate back and forth so ill just stop here.
you have your opinion and i have mine.

jja125
12-18-2002, 02:21 PM
there are alot of xc tracks that run on both woods and mx tracks like down at high point xc national so you spend 90% of your time in the woods and like 10% on the mx track each lap.

just my $0.02

Extremeracer167
12-18-2002, 02:46 PM
why back out of a debate? This is when its fun to be on forums. i think ATC hit the nail on the head. WHen your out there racing for the series points. Taking a 10 second break, or just slowing down for a few seconds, u have NOOOOO idea how competeitive these XC races are. If u dont go balls out the ENTIRE race, u are getting passed. And thats a FACT! And When u just "slow down" u loose any rythm that u had and its hard to get it back! So just slowing down doesnt work.......AT ALL

QuadRacer041
12-19-2002, 03:18 AM
ok, if you say so

12-19-2002, 07:34 AM
Well I just started racing XC and everytime I've crossed the finish line,,they litteraly handed me my arse. Now don't get me wrong,,i've raced my fair share of MX and it flat wore me out. There's been several times I've got back to the truck and couldn't even get my damn water bottle open the arm pump was so bad.. But with XC arm pump sets in and then ya got about another 1.5 hours of racing left. using your palm to push the thumb throttle is no fun,,especially on hill climbs. so,,the way I see it..you need big balls to race MX and if your not tired at the end,,your not racing very hard.. takin 30-50 jumps at the same time with another 50 inch quad is not for the faint of heart. XC doesn't really take big balls,,but you better be in good shape, have lots of stamina, and be ready to torture your body for 1.5 or 2 hours none stop..

toby400ex
12-19-2002, 07:47 AM
yeah, i hate arm pump, my thumb didnt kno wwhat i was tellin it to do, i thought my throttle fell off or got loose on the bars, it was wierd(my first time getting armpump). I took my hand off the grip for a sec then i was ready to hold on for another 5 minutes, it was funky shizznit. And i need to get in better shape, and im usin some of those spring things for my hands and lower arms, maybe it'll help that darn forsaken arm pump.

That hill was between 2-3 gear for me weighing 15o and some decent motor work. 2nd was tapped, and 3rd was too high with a 14t front and stock rear if that gives any indication. And it was LOOOOOONG. And towards the top there was a nice little drop off that u could jump. Overall.....that track was TOUGH!!! My dad helped change 26 tires!! Thats NUTS!

cdalejef
12-19-2002, 08:43 AM
I started at the bottom in second then hit 3rd about half way and taped her out all the way to the top on my R. You could hit that jump, land and hammer across a flat field and never let off the gas.
I only had 1 flat and can't wait to go back next year.

Extremeracer167

I believe that it does take balls to race XC. Even know your not hitting 70 foot jumps your keeping yourself moving for so long and right there to not give up and "Slow down" is tough. And still flying through the woods and nipping trees seemings pretty dangerous also. In my mind they both equal with competition and "Balls." But what am I saying, your the XC racer :huh

How wide are your front ends for XC racing? Do you leave stock length so it's easier to get through the woods or do you go with +2 a arms?

Extremeracer167
12-19-2002, 12:24 PM
Alot of the guys run +1 a-arms, but bring it back in a tad with 4-1 offset wheels. And the axles are usually +1. Thats what alot of the pros run anyways.

Yep, Wisp was a tough tire on tires and thoughs hill were steep. I'm glad the morning class didn't have to climb the hills.

Here's a picture of my brand new factory cannondale front tire and rim that I rode 4 miles on the second lap with a flat.

As Chad Duvall said "Rocks what rocks, more like boulders"

Extremeracer167

The worst part about that hill......Nobody really mentioned this. B4 u went up that hill, u went down pretty much the same hill but a little further over. And on the 1st lap, with it still being grass covered, it was VERY SCARY. Cause anyone that rides knows that if u lock up the brakes on grass u just go faster. Well imagine going down a 3-400 ft hill SUPER STEEP covered in grass, so u didnt really want to use your breaks. Then at the bottom of the ****(u actually never went to the bottom of the hill) u actually had to make a real hard left hander on the hill go down about a 30 ft straightaway then u turn left again and went straight up that hill. No run AT ALL!! It was a really wild section of the track. AH what the h#ll im i talkin about........the whole dang track was wild!!

lt250r91
12-20-2002, 09:01 AM
The other thing is that all the hills are for skiing and driving ranges. So the ground is super hard packed and traction was very interesting. All you did was slide, it was almost like you were on ice.

Extremeracer167

Heres a shot of what it looked like. I know its far away, but u will get the idea. The 1st big uphill was also pretty massive. And it was really hard to keep the front end down. Then the BIG downhill. And u can see how u turn like halfway down the hill then shooot right back up. The hills dont look that big on this pic. But just look at that ski lodge. That this was HHUUUUUGGEEE That should give u an idea of how the hills dwarf that building. And i bet that building would sit on 2-3 football fields

Yep, that was me on the GasGas. I had an awful race. Lets just say twist throttles suck. I was fighting a cramp in my wrist the whole race, which caused me to not be able to open the quad up. This course was super tight in spots. The suspension also was off. Front was stiff and rear was to soft. I'm order a thumb throttle today for it and going to adjust the suspension.

Who won?

lt250r91
12-23-2002, 08:47 AM
Jeffrey Vensel won the 2-stroke Class and the overall on his 250r w/ a bashee engine in it. Todd Krupinski won the 4-stroke class on a Z400.

I think Jeff would have given Macri all he could handle in 4 stroke Mod this past year. Age does not matter in XC as much as MX. If anything Jeff has an advantage of being a very smart racer. I personally watched Jeff run right on my brothers *****. It was a muddy race and neither one of them could not ride to their abilities. But I would have to say that I am impressed with Jeff's racing abilities.

Yeah Brad is pretty fast. Alot of his speed comes with his engine. At taylortown, Brad and Matt Foutch were running 1st and 2nd, and i was just following them for the first 3-4 miles becuase they were smashin into eachother and i didnt want to get involved in that. But then i got a flat and went over the bars and lost em. They were both super fast, but brad had a HUGE advantage in the open stuff with his 500 kit.
