I picked up this 400ex about a month ago. My friends all have YFZ450's, so one of them is ragging on me that my quads a piece junk. Well if it takes me $10k i will make this quad run as good or better than his! This is what im starting with i have a box full of new parts so far and if honda of troy ever get there heads out of there butt's i will have a few more. I will be adding alot of pics of my progress.
Stay tuned!!!

It might not be as fast as a YFZ but a least it will run every time. Every one i know with a YFZ has something go wrong with it on every ride we are on.
i got both, equally reliable yfz is more maintence, putting the money in the 400ex to beat them is a waste of time, all they have to do is some mild mods and they will be way ahead

you guys know, 450s arent THAT fast right.. everyone seems to think that on here.
3k in motor work would eat the piss out of a 450

I am hetrick racing, im getting the 440 national kit with the aluminum sleeve, ported and polished head and HD studs.
I have a insane performance airbox and uni -filter, I have a full yosh rs-3 comp carbon coming tomorrow. After I get the shocks and wheels in I will be sending her to Hetrick hopefully end of feb early march.
hetrick told me I would be atleast in the mid 40's with that kit.
Also waiting on Honda of Troy for my plastics...see my other post for that nightmare.

01-15-2008, 02:46 AM
Ok the teardown begins. I installed the insane performance airbox tonight and took the stock exhaust off as the new yosh carbon should be here in the morning!
I ordered a uni filter for a 400ex but it was 2" bigger than the stocker, it wouldnt fit in the new box so i had to put the used one in until I get something else.

The uni filter that came was tagged for the 400ex and 450r was to big to fit in this box so I had to put the dirty stocker on until the new one comes. Wont be ordering it from honda of troy thats for sure!
Slochrane
01-15-2008, 02:55 AM
heres how it all fits in the box with the stock sized filter. Im overall very happy with the insane product so far.

01-15-2008, 02:57 AM
Here it is with the lid on. The lid has holes drilled in the bottom with a baffle on top.
Slochrane
01-15-2008, 02:59 AM
Here what the underside of the lid looks like, and this is where i call it a night.
More pics later on today since it's 5am here. Yoshi carbon will hopefully be here!

Interesting airbox... Do they make a pre-filter for the lid? Or is it just the open holes? Looks good with your build, keep us posted!

Yeah I like the air box. Where did you get it and how much did it cost? What about your starter wire and stuff did you have to get longer ones or did the stock ones reach inside the air box?

I paid a guy $1900 for this quad about a week before Christmas. I think that was a good deal, thats why I decided I could put $3000 or so into this thing and have a sick quad the way I want it for 5 or 6K. Mean while my friends have almost 7k into there 450's off the dealer floor. I think i can be pretty competitive with them whenever Iam done.
ctheojr450
01-17-2008, 05:20 AM
I think it comes down to rider ability when you match up a 440ex to a 450...Yeah the 450 definatly has an advantage in alot of areas...But if you put someone on a 440 that can really ride it will be a close call....just my opinion....oh and save 3-4 grand
f150mann
01-17-2008, 05:34 AM
i like that seat cover, can you buy them without buying the graphics kit?
Slochrane
01-17-2008, 11:28 AM
Not sure i got the whole kit for 53 bucks.
I dont think Im going to have time to install anything yet again today. 12hr day today in the steel mill. Oh well that means more parts on the way soon.
atvhonda-rider
01-17-2008, 12:04 PM
keep it bro looks great and good choices on parts, ive noticed insane performance before and im thinking about buying a box from them soon... remember on motor work, its not all about bore.. its about combination of parts and air flow... a 416 with web cam hardened rockers +1mm valves a good port and polish job with a beatiful carb may run a lil faster and more reliable than that 440... just my opinion tho.. and you can always bore UP after a 416 : )

01-21-2008, 10:04 AM
Ok, i'am back at it. I had some trouble with the bolts on the head so I have to go and order a few from the local Honda shop so the exhaust isn't on yet.
Now some good news, I called Honda of troy and tracked my package it will be here tomorrow :) about freakin time!
So i started putting the bars on, I got a set of renthal contour big bars to go with my trail tech clamp and dash. Also I picked up a Team Alba Billet thumb throttle on ebay for $15 bucks! Im going to get some ASV levers from Ebay next and that will complete my controls.
Slochrane
01-21-2008, 10:09 AM
I also got a Twin air Power flow kit from Ebay for $5 bucks :D I couldnt believe it!!! It fits great in the Insane Performance airbox.
the Power Flow kit has a sweet Billet adapter that the filter bolts to, its a nice piece. this is what it all looks like together.

Ok I'm back with some updates. Well most of my parts but one has finally arrived from Honda of Troy. The tank cover wasn't in the box so I'm still waiting for that, if its not here tomorrow I'm asking them for a refund and I'll order it from Motosports and I'll have it in 2 days. Ok the exhaust is on. It's quiet with the sparky in, but it screams with it out I'm very happy with it.

The new 2005 plastic and and headlight is on. I switched wiring harnesses with the 03 so i didn't have to cut any wires,it worked great. It wasn't hard at all for people interested in doing it. I like the 05-07 look much better than the 99-04 style. Here's a pic of the light assembly.

I see you got the DMP Covers seat cover. It will really look nice once you get all the graphics installed to go with it.
Does that exhaust come with a guard? or do you use the stock one?
Slochrane
01-27-2008, 06:30 PM
No there's no guard but the stocker fits, i'm trying to find something different. As for the tires and wheels I'm going Black baja;s on the rear with 20" 6 ply razr's . The fronts undecided on baja's or just the Black GP's with 22' 6 ply razr's.

Get a black tank cover itll look badass. I did that to my 400ex to two tone it a little more. I dunno if oem or maier would be cheaper. But i have a maier tank cover on my oem plastic it fits perfectly.
Also a carbon fiber head pipe guard from E Line would look amazing and match your pipe perfectly. I know they make guards for stock pipes and aftermarket ones as well. They might have one specific for a yosh headpipe. They also have universal ones diff lengths.
your 400ex is lookin good.

01-27-2008, 11:09 PM
Your build looks to be going well. I like the Yoshi exhaust on there and that air box is pretty trick. You mentioned what your plans were for the engine but what are you thinking for the suspension? In my opinion (and I am sure others will agree) a built engine is great but if the chassis can't handle it you're going to have a real hard time keeping up with YFZ's and the bunch.
Slochrane
01-27-2008, 11:41 PM
I'm probably going to get a set of 450r's and have then re-worked along with the rear or maybe a set of +1's and elka's forr the front...not sure yet.
As for the black tank cover its on the way....Honda of Troy sucks. :grr:

The kit included decals for the front fenders. I really didnt like the looks of them on the front fenders so I improvised !

Still unsure on the carbon fiber heat shield, might be took much with all the black on mine. I will make a decision next week and let you know for sure then.
BTW, my wife is pissed at you for posting the photos of your Yoshi Carbon exhaust!!! :-)
Just kidding, she agreed with me that it would look great on my black 08.

Well, crazy is probably not the best description, more like fair compared to other pricing I found. I got it for $459 with free shipping. But compared to their Buy It Now price of $595 I am a little surprised they took my offer. The best deals I had found in other places at some online discounters was $459 with $25 shipping and $479 with free shipping, both on the west coast. They were also not mainstream retailers which makes me a little nervous.
Regardless I am happy with the deal, plus I trust Leesons as I have bought from them a few times, AND they are only 2 shipping days from me!

ha i didn't even know they made those. my powermadd's took me about an hour to mount. which i thought was way too much fighting with the levers/throttle. i liked them alot though.

Actually they both are great mounts and each has it's strengths and weaknesses. I have the Rox on my 400 and the Powermadd version on my wife's 250ex.
While the Powermadds are harder to find the right spot to make them fit the way you want, they have a better mounting system at the hand guards. The PowerMadd's hardware at that location is far superior to the simpler Rox setup (simple bolts with "star" lock washers). BUT, the Rox mounts make it easier to mount where you want them on the bars since they have a much smaller "footprint" on the bars. The Rox only barely goes around half the diameter of the bar and is very streamlined compared to the bulky Powermadd bar mount section.
If Powermadd were smart they would pay Rox a licensing fee and change to that bar mount style. Not only is it simpler and better but it has less hardware and would be cheaper to manufacture. Then you would have the best of both.
