This may or may not be the place to ask but here it is. I just received an email yesterday about an Apex 250R. Does anyone have info on this or has anyone else heard of this? It's the first I heard. My daughter will be moving up in a year or 2 so it got me to thinking but I can't find any info or pics. It's not that I'm going to buy now but it would throw another quad in the mix for the sport quad class. Thanks in advance for info and comments.

They are custom built shifters useing Yamaha running gear. They are hot.
We have some custom shifter that run the SSQSA here in Fla. that use the Honda CRF150R Eng. and they are fast.

I seen one run this weekend at the WORCS race this weekend. Very fast. Looks like one nice race quad. Looks top notch.
Price tag is around $10,000

Per the Apex owner, this will be a production bike.

I find that hard to believe on the price but under 5500 MSRP with the elka's might be decent, and that being said I have not talked to one person about these just what I read here.
Say you buy a raptor 250 retail put a 4 valve head, exhaust, elkas, etc. etc. you would still only be about 6500...maybe less.

and you still dont have near the power that a 250f motor has. i saw an article a while back where a guy put a 250f motor in a yz450 frame. the quad ran in the 450 class and could hang with them and beat them. i think $10,000 is a little steep but after building all kinds of race quads for my boys in the past 6 years i know that is really a pretty good price. i have a ex/yz hybrid right now that my son races that has about $20,000 in it.

Yamaha and more importantly Apex would be looking for more mass appeal so as to actually make money.
I am not trying to BASH anyone just trying to make sense of a business situation. I am not even saying you can't justify the 10K what I am saying is that anyone with enough resources to bring something like that to the market more than likely isn't going to bring it at the 10K price point. Even the KTM 450 and 525 are less than that. They have a LOT of the better components available for quads and they don't command 10K.
A DS 450 which is technology wise a real masterpiece is only 7500 MSRP.
All that being said a 250 that is strong and light sounds like a ton of fun to me but they have to sell enough of it to make money. APEX would have a better chance of doing it over Yamaha due to the business model and the nut required to break even. Essentially "borrow" the design, put some different plastics on it and release one HECK of a quad for about 5K.
Yamaha has historically binned parts and reused and therefore could put something together affordably and still be pretty nice. Put the 250F motor in a 450 chassis with a few small tweaks and a lot of reused parts waa-laa 250 world beater for about 6K. Again this is just one mans opinion who doesn't know crap for the most part.
One thing is for sure though. If either company were to attempt something like that it would be EXTREMELY bold. Don't see Yamaha being that bold. Many times there is a fine line between boldness and stupidity and history usually determines what side of the line you were on. A 6-6500 MSRP would be my guess for something like that just looking at the markets and where it would fit and who they would be selling it to.
Last statement to ruin all of my credibility in this discussion is that I have not nor do I plan on staying at a Holiday Inn Express in the near future.

thing is with these race ready quads is most cant plunk down that much at one time. like us it has taken years to get our quad where it is today. years ago my son raced a cannondale moto for a local cannondale dealer. the most race ready quad ever built but still not perfect but real good. back then the price tag for a moto was $13,000 which was steep but also most the 250r and 400ex we ran against had that much or more in them to be a top notch mx quad. there were rumors before the raptor 250 came out that yamaha was going to build a 250f motored quad. there is just not the market out there for them to make any money on a quad like that truth is the big 3 make their money off the utility quads. i am very surprised we have the 450 quads we have from the big 3 now. we will just have to wait and see. i think its a trick looking quad but way out of my price range. i can build a 250f motored quad in a 250r frame for way less but it would not be a production quad so there would not be many places you could legally race it. i think they will sell and blow the blaster/300ex class away at the nationals but that is pretty much all i can see them being used for. as fast as they are most local races would probably make them run with the 450's.

Not legal in Atva production classes for 2009 is what I have been told.

Leagally it would make the ATVA class because there has been more then 1 built. From what I hear there are 4 version's of the 250 and a top secert 90 mod. But you can't purchase them yet because they are PROTO types only.

They would not be legal because they have to be homologated. 4 bikes would not cut it.

i AM TOLD THATTHEY MUST HAVE 100 BUILT AND ALSO APPROVED BY THE ATVA BY 1/1/2009 TO BE PRODUCTION LEGAL THROUGH THE HOMOGULATION PROCESS TO BE PRODUCTION CLASS LEGAL.
YOU CAN RUN A ONE BUILD IN THE MOD CLASS. BUT I THINK THAT WOULD RULE OUT THE 300 CC CLASS.
I COULD BE WRONG BUT I GOT THE INFO FROM A SOLID SOURCE.

dirtwheels buyers guide 2009 has an apex 250 in it.
it claims it has a CRF250R motor.
says it will kill the rappy 250.

If it had that motor it would kill it. It won't kill it 7400 dollars worth though.
