What king of paddle does everyone use on their EX's? I am using Skat Trak Edge with ITP C-Series rims. I am not to pleased with the paddles. I need some paddles that not only drag well but roost as well.

Any suggestions

any kind of v-paddle tire will alow to "whip" the quad around at the top of the dune.

I use ITP Sand Star front and rears. They're a perfect all around sand tire. I'm got mine mounted on ITP T-9 .190 Black Pro Series Rims. Here's a picture.

Great looking quad... ITP Sand star huh? I love the look of them. The Skat trak I use are V paddle but I cant get them to "whip" like I would like.

What's the tire size and paddle count of your Edges and what air pressure do you run? What dunes do you ride?

Nothing roosts and "whips" as well as a set of knobbies. Most people don't like duning on knobbies cause it's easier to get stuck. But if you know how to avoid that, nothing slides around in the sand like knobbies.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of the C-Series wheels. Too heavy for a sand rim. They do look good though and I imagine their strong.

I'm running 8-paddle 20x10x10 Extreme Haulers on ITP wheels. Killer straight and hill climbing performance, not much for roosting though.

Everyone says Sand Stars, but next paddles won't be Sand Stars. Everyone I know has trouble keeping air in the Sand Stars. From day one mine leaked from the bead and I wasn't even aired down, I was running like 6lbs. Now I have to run alot of pressure or they go flat:( No bend in the rim and the tire bead was fine. I even left them aired up(15lbs) the off season because the tire guy said to "strech them before you run them" so the paddles are less likely to tear off:confused:

I also think the Sand Stars were to much paddle for my 416. When I hit 5th in the flats the bike doesn't pull as hard as it use to.
I was much happier with my old Sand SkatesII.

I had the identical problem with one of my rear tires. I took it to a tire shop and had them put Bead Sealer on the tire and it hasn't leaked since.

I Live in Utah where I run out at Little Sahara with around 60,000 acres of sand and at a higher elevation. 4000 feet above see level.

Im seeing a trend in the sand stars and the geckos. With my Skat Traks now I dont float on the sand like I Should. I will look into the Sand stars.

Thanks

a better paddle than the sand stars are sand skate IIs by sand tires unlimited.
i think they cost a little more but they will slide easier than the sand stars but will have a better roost than the sand sharks.
they are better quality and dont leak air.
not many people run them because they think they are the same as the cheaper sand sharks but they are better and hook-up better on hill-climbs.

This is quite a thread. I thought that people liked the Geckos the least? Different riding styles determine different tires I guess. I know the Geckos have to much bite for a 300, they dug themselves into a hole before they got going, are they better on the 400? Can you start in 2nd with them?

I hope that keeping air in the Sand Stars isn't a chronic problem, I just got a set of them. I guess we'll see.

SandMan69, What you said about the Skats is just about opposite of what I've heard others say about them, they were talking about the Glide/Haulers though.

I'm by no means an expert, but what size and how many paddles were your Skat Edges?

no i dont think its a chronic problem i know the 10-15 people that i ride with all have sandstars and no one has had any problems with them... but yea i launch in 2nd everytime

Those rear tires are cool looking. I wonder which "common" tire it most rides like?

They are 20x10x10 with 7 paddles. And yes they are the Skat Edges. They hook up almost to well... Good for climbing but not on the "whips" I thing I need something that will float and spin more?

I run the dunes here in Oregon and have 22" sand stars on the front and 20x10x10 8 paddle extreames on the rear. I tried the rear sand stars and didn't like them. Not enough bite for tree shots. The 8 paddles are a bit much for a basicly stock 400ex (piped, jetted, k&n, no lid) so I run the preassure up at 4.5psi to allow for more tire spin. When you want to make sure the bike won't bog make the backend is light by transfering your weight forward. When drqaging I'm up on the bars to start not just to keep the front down but to allow the rears to spin and gain some wheel speed. Hill climbing is the same. leaning on the bars not only keeps the front down, it allows you to keep some tire speed, clutch the bike if more speed is needed or to whip it back down hill if needed. Another myth is that straight paddle are not as good for trails and/or turning as angled ones. If all you want to do is drift your bike than this is somewhat true. But if you can't whip your bike or turn sharp in trails with straight paddles its not the tires. Turn in, push on the bars, throttle, repeat. It's that easy.

I run sand skates 2, 20x11x8. I think they work good. What size rim are you running? I heard that makes a difference. Also just make sure you do not over paddle.

If you are duning on a 10" wheel, swith to an 8" wheel and you will be amazed at the difference!

Trust me, I have used both.
