Depends on the terrain, bike, and tires. Usually 2nd on dirt and in the sand with 8 paddles, or 1st gear in the sand with 9 paddles on my HRC 450. I have found that I have to do 3rd gear in most dirt on the other 450 (with the piston, porting, etc), though. Stock gearing, both 07s.

I have:
21" front
20" rear
14/38 gearing on my 07 YFZ.

I start in 1st and shift faster.....I found I can get a better jump if I do it this way. ;)

if you can shift quick enough in 1st its better. like have it in 1st as soon as you take off and hear it go shift to 2nd and so on. I've tried many different launches and 1at you get a better start.

neutral? lol

I leave it in neutral and as soon as i come down on the kick starter to start the motor, i drop it first pop the clutch and off i go. Bascially i make one big jumping motion.

If my motor was runnign, i will still start in first.

i dont like starting in 1st because i hit false neautural almost constantly because i just flick the shifter with my toe, not a full click up

The only time i start in first in on a dead eng start, if i'm on the gate i always start in 2nd dragging the clutch pinned on the rev limiter holding the rear brake.

i'm telling you if you get your shifting down 1st is best to start in.

Heres what I do:

-put it in 1st gear and hold in the clutch while giving just less throttle than you taking off and just spinning your tires like crazy.
-slowly start letting out your clutch but not too much were you start to move and as soon as the gate drops or your signal to go you just let that clutch go peg the throttle all the way and shift quick to 2nd.
-then do whatever. I've been practicing for awhile now because I used to drag 440 strokers and stock banshees on my stock 400ex. i would be out front to a point then the banshee pulls up and starts to get me and then you hear a monsterous 440 built stroker and see it fly by you like its nothing haha.

I'm not gonna disagree with your style whatever works for you but my last two races i started in 2nd gear i got the holeshot all 4 moto's and held it for 4 laps won twice, my bike will wind out to much in first and we are starting on concrete so 1st gear unless you slip the clutch alot your gonna pull wheelies, different tire sizes are gonna require a different gear to start in i'm running 18 and 19 mx tires.

yeah very true on concrete 2nd is a deffinate. With 18" tires on the rear I say 2nd is a deffinate. I was talking with 20" rears like stock and stuff.

Agreed, starting in 1st on a 450r w/ 18" tires is pretty useless :P
Most likely hit the rev limiter before u move 5 feet.
