Well, it looks like I need a new axle bearing carrier...

Should I get another stock one or go for an aftermarket twin row carrier? And for those of you who have them is it worth the money? What is the chain adjuster on them like?

Go with the RPM Tapered Carrier, best carrier money can buy IMO.

Yes it comes with bearings, I believe they cost $249 but I could be mistaken...its worth it though. Here, this is off their site:

RPM as the originator of the tapered roller bearing system axle carrier, CNC machines each carrier from billet 6061 aluminum. By installing tapered roller bearings, that are load rated at 8000 lbs. of side load versus the stock single-row bearings that have a side load rating of 500 lbs., you get a bearing that is 16 times stronger than stock unit. This allows the carrier to spin your axle on the strongest bearings available, and our tapered bearings are serviceable, unlike regular ball bearings. Also, remember that this high-tech tapered bearing system is also used in our Cyclone wheel hubs.

OUCH!
How long did you ride that thing with bad bearings!?

By the time I noticed there was something wrong, I wrode about 30KM (to make it back home). It could have been damaged longer than that but I never noticed it.

I think I will try just replacing the seals and the bearings for now. I'm told it may hold anyway? If not, I'll get an RPM one after the holiday bills are payed off.

FYI...buying a stock bearing carrier vs an aftermarket one will run you approx. the same cost unless you get decent deals on Honda parts. Go with the aftermarket one. (most brands are identical)

Thanks for the help everyone, it's apreciated!

pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by tapered ?

ever repacked/replaced front wheel bearings on a 2 wheel drive truck? Those are tapered bearings. The rollers are rod shaped. The bearings and races are seperable. The twin row uses strait bearings (for lack of "correct" terminology). These use ball bearings. The bearing is a single unit (not seperable). Also understand. The twin row means you actually have 4 bearings in there instead of 2 (like the stock carrier).

Hope that helps.

rico is right, the tapered carrier might be better but you lose chain adjustment.
the double bearing carrier works just as well and cost alot less.

Herrmann motor sports sells them for 169

http://www.herrmannracing.com/

he does sell them on ebay and I believe they sell for $130 on ebay......

all the carriers are pretty much the same , it just depends on where you buy it.

some one in a old thread mentioned a rad carrier? that has a grease zerk on the side......

Why do tapered bearing carriers have less adjustment then dual row carriers?

I did that to my stock carrier too. And then, i got a rpm twin row......i rode on it for a season, then took it apart and rebuilt it, then about a month or so later that one went bad too....i had a seal go bad. and it destroyed that too. So now i have a tapered carrier.

I think that if I do a little grinding/sanding on the left side it should hold.. what do you guys think??

mine looked like that at one time too, we just took a dremel to it for a while then went up one size on the bearings.

save the hassle, pull the 130 out of your pocket go buy a ready to install dual row carrier and be done with it. They are fully greasable, they will last longer then the stock, and alls u will have to do is slide it in

Blysster
12-02-2002, 03:33 PM
If mine wears out again or doesn't last I'll be getting an after market one that already has the bearings in it.

It's not worth the trouble of taking the old bearings out, grinding the carrier, putting new bearings in...

I'd hate to see what the bearings looked like haha

Burgard bearing carriers are great, I have been using them in my Z400(400EX Style) and they work great. You can't find a better carrier for the money!

are there any advantages if you go aftermarket over stock ?

Pappy
12-26-2002, 11:30 AM
not sure on reasons other then the stock carrier is almost $200 without bearings and seals:huh

Stock carrier are Cast and aftermarket are billet which is stronger and less likely to crack. I have seen several cracked stock carriers, but never an aftermarket one.

Also, stock are typically single row bearings and aftermarket are double row or taper, which allows them to last longer and take on more force.

12-26-2002, 12:00 PM
aftermarets also have grease zerks..which is a big plus...all around it's a better deal..I purposely trashed my stocker gettin it out of my swingarm just so I had to buy a new one..:D and for the price I got mine,,I'd have to be retarded not to get one..
