I'm replacing the high comp piston in my ex and when I removed the valve cover and cam I did'nt see the plunger/spring the manual showed underneath the cam, I don't know if it fell in the case but I did'nt see it. It's got a stage 2 hot cam so I'm not sure if the spring supposed to be there with an aftermarket cam cause the bigger lobes. What is the spring for and can it damage my engine being so small?

If you are still running the hotcam you dont use the spring and plunger. You are fine without it. The spring and plunger are used for the decompression mechanism for the kick start on the xr400 but since all the 400ex's are electric start you dont need it.

Thanks man, that's what I was thinking when I didnt see the decompression mech on the cam but I wasnt sure. That makes me feel better knowing it's not down in the engine.
