X2...plus you can still add nice upgrades to them, until your ready for a 450

get an R for sure. I went from a 300ex to a 250r about 5 years ago and have never regreted it. I'd still take it over a 450. Plus they will smoke a 400ex

I would say 250R.

Mainly, because I've seen basically race ready 250R's..I mean, DECKED. Only with a few small issues that the owners think are a big deal, and expensive fixes.

Example, I've seen a full Lonestar 250R.. amazing machine, just needing a little TLC.. BUT, needed a new top-end. $2,500.00. REAL cheap to put a new top-end on it, but the owner thought it would be like a 4-stroke, expense wise. Thats a good deal, on a completely race ready R. Little work into the details, and a new top-end, and your in business. May have to wait for a great deal to pop up...but you know how that goes.

My opinion.

Id say if you can find it. A good condition, modded 250r.

If not then a good condition 400ex.

well, my budget is down to 2000, i love the 4 stroke, i have decided that in order to be cost effective i need an lower tech air cooled bike, so that leaves the 400ex. i guess i am just gonna go for it, i think i just need to go for it. i love 450s, they are amazing, but on the trails, an extra 10hp does not mean anything if you cant use it.

If your doing trails, a 400 is probably a better choice anyway

400ex's are known to be better in trails than 450's, because the 450's like to be reved, and have harded suspension. 400ex's are great bikes, and have many get-up-and-go parts.

440, exhaust, cam, porting, carb, etc.

Just the pipe alone woke up my ex ALOT

a thought crossed my mind, would it be cheaper to but a full bike in good condition or peice together a bike part by part buying the stuff off ebay? i was thinking if i could get through the hassle i would have a better understanding of the bike by the time i was done anyway

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!

Why do you think people part quads out, because you can make more money.

Its way cheaper to buy a whole one.

The 250R will out handle and flat out smoke a 400EX but DO NOT BUY A 250R. They are too old and have had the snot run out of them since they were new. They will nickle and dime you. And good parts are getting scarce.

The 400EX is a great woods machine. And parts are easy to find and not to mention cheap to buy new from Honda.

I have owned both the 250R and a 400EX and a 450R. The 400EX is happy medium of the 3. If you can ride a 2 stroke like its suppose to be ridden you would have no problem but the 400 is still the better choice
