what size carburetor

how do you figure out what size a carburetor is, i have one off a 400ex that supposedly did not fit correctly and want to know the size. I know there measured in millimeters, but how do you get that number?

Use a set of calipers-5 bucks at harbor freight.

do i measure the intake hole though?

The outlet of it would be my guess since that is the smallest point and its machined to that diameter.
