how much power increase would a hotcam stage 1 have in my 400ex. Will it wake the motor up and still keep the reliability?

yes you will deff. beable to tell a difference and reliability with the hotcams isnt an issue.

whats the difference between stage 1 and 2? im gettin ready to put in a stage 1, but will hold off if a stage 2 is better

A stage 1 is a milder cam. It gives more of a mid range and top end increase.

The stage 2 is more of a low range through mid range cam.

the stage 2 had more lift and longer duration. It opens the valves more, and keeps them open longer.

Unless your planning on putting a 440 kit in your 400 one day, id get the stage one.

I actually have a stage one for sale right now....Good shape, used though.

stage 1 will make more power everywhere over the stock cam. Stage 2 will be about the same at stock or slightly less off idle but will have great gains in the mid and top end. Look at duration when you are looking for where it makes the power. More duration generally means a higher power band. Search the dyno section and see some results with both cams and see where they are making power.

to run a stage 1 do you have to change any other internals?

No, with any HotCam, you are able to use the stock rockers, valve springs etc.

You just put the cam chain sprocket on the cam, line it all up right and put her back together.:p

i have a stage 1 in mine and i'm pretty pleased with it.

i later on added the FMF hi flo headers to the setup and the EHS Racing airbox lid. maaan that thing rips pretty good. it revs alot harder than stock.

Actually,

stage 1- mid-top end increase

stage 2- mid increase w/ more top end than stage 1

Quite possibly Glamis kid, and yes it will change the idle sound.

Not by a whole lot, but it will sound alot less uniform. I like the way it sounds.:D

what do you mean by less uniform? honestly, i have no idea what you mean. i am gettin a stage 1 HC, and im curious what im gonna be dealin with

01-01-2008, 12:23 PM
he means I think it will idle more like a stock car lol. you here it tick more and it sounds like a race car idling where its not a steady running more of a power sound.

so more of a rumble, or a tough sounding (i know those aint the most ADULT kinda language words, bet hey they work) at idle? kinda intimadating type of thing?

I have the stage 1 HC and it didn't change the idle sound at all. It's still smooth as can be.

01-01-2008, 12:49 PM
its just a louder tick when you have it in

When my brother had the stage 1 hotcam it sounded more agressive and mean.

idk man mybe your forgetting how stock 400ex sounds or your used to it. My motor is stock but when my brother had te cam you could deffinately tell them apart. It had more of a grunt. Who cares about sound cause its a good mod

Who cares about sound cause its a good mod I rode it for 4 years with the stock cam and just recently did the mod, I still remember what it sounded like. It did make a nice power increase but no difference in sound. Most mild cams like this won't make a sound difference whether it be in a bike, quad or car. The stage 1 HC isn't exactly a big cam.

Did your bro do a higher comp piston or exhaust mod at the same time? That might be what your hearing.

i guess a stage 3 would be loppie

why would i have to remove my +6 timing key? does the HC make the engine run hotter?
i like the throttle response of the +6 key.

You may want to call sparks and ask them. The different cam profile will change the timing a little.
