I know a guy who is having trouble getting his 400ex to start now that it is cold outside. He claims that it is flooding out when trying to start it the first time. It starts fine after it is warmed up. Changes the plug regularly, so it probably isn't that. Water in fuel, bad needle and seat? What do you guys think?

400ex's are hard bikes to start in the cold. Tell him to put in a 40 or 42 pilot jet. It helped mine a ton when starting in the cold or at low throttle positions.

does he have and aftermarket rev box/cdi...if he does, tell him to put the stocker back in and try that

I had the same "cold stating blues" and after tossing a #40 slowjet in my carb cold starting is much better. I pump it a few times and it'll start much better then it did with the stock slow jet.

my bike starts within a second or 2 when its cold and sat for a month.
still running stock pilot.

just make sure the jets arent plugged with specs of dirt.

The warmer Cali air also helps your starting too I'm sure. :p

if 30 degrees is warm than sure it helps...
my friends 400 has all the same mods as mine and he has a hard time starting no matter what temp it is.
depends on the engine and how well its maintained...carb too. i clean my carb every other trip.
