My motor locked up again. I am not sure whats wrong this time. It was running OK at the track, and on the last lap of practice, clunk. It just locked up. It will not turn over, it will go in and out of gear, the sparkplug is not torn up, no oil leaking anywhere. hmm Plenty of oil. I am dreading how much it will cost this time. I am thinking of taking it to Legacy and let them build it. I guess modded 4 strokes aint for me.

only thing i can think of is cold sieze, or jus plain bad luck, coulda been a rod bearing thing, mine blew up, but it sent the piston head into my spark plug, now thats a ugly site, lmao, good luck fixin her up

It might be that you bent a valve, or one of your valves is way out of wack?

Man X-Rider that sucks!!! If its gonna be doing that to you then you might as well go real big this time:)

Evan
11-11-2002, 04:40 PM
Chad I dont have the money to go big. I already have a spare head and a spare cyl so if it needs to be bored then i will go back to a 416 and while Im at it get a Sparks pipe and some porting.
Its weird how it happend, I wasnt revin it, I think I may have been in too high a gear going into the turn and stalled it out and it just stuck. It had been runnin slightly funny all day but not enough to worry me(slight hesitation, seemed rich. very very slight noise from the clutcharea, like a loose bolt, I thought it was my heat sheild rattling though. I had just changed the plug, the old plug was rich lookin with deposits on it, so i put a new one in, and the new one looks lean, hmm maybe trash clogged something and leaned it out. Does a 180 main seem lean to you?
Hope I get time to see whats wrong.

Thats weird,,,theres no telling what it was! Going big really isnt that expensive if you do the work yourself,,,just get you a stroker crank and put it together yourself!!!

Sounds like you may have broke the clutch basket, that happened to me twice.

Evan
11-11-2002, 07:44 PM
hmm wyndzer really? I sure hope so. I had thought about it but didnt give it too much thought.

Well I hope it's the Clutch that will be cheaper. :D

i feel your pain man...good luck with it

Evan
11-11-2002, 11:03 PM
Well it could be several reasons.
1. Not gettin oil to piston
2. Lean
3. Got hot

I dunno which one it is but the rings are broken and seized in the cyl. The piston seems fine from the top. But I cant get the cyl off, its stuck good. The head is fine. It looks like the cyl got hot, and its light colored on the head and piston. Also the walls are smooth and hot lookin. ANy suggestions to get head off? Anyone think a 180 main is too lean? I may be going back to stock cyl/piston. I dont need anymore headaches.

damn im in the same boat man :o

i downshifted from 2nd to first and went into a false neutral, I held it wot and let the clutch out, it revved out and then 1st gear engaged,it broke first gear and POP......:o

Im buyin a new left case..........AGAIN :grr

I feel your pain........

Well Ill be durned,, you need my R motor. Its indestructible I think. Ever thought of lettin ESR build your motor? I am gettin tired of buildin my motor and something going wrong whether its my fault or not. After ESR built my motor, I feel it will not fail me. Its been more reliable than my 4 stroker.

i would say a 180 main is super rich, i have a 170 in mine and its rich, should prob be a 168 but i am gonna pull my lid and its winter so yhe air is really dense

i have a 416 JE w/ stage 2 hotcam

What Compression were you running? Just go back to like a 416 and get a 10.8:1 and you should be fine.

180 does sound waaayy to friggin' lean. god. way lean. it probly overheated. take the head off and look. see if you can tap the piston loose again. just give it a little tap might be good. but sounds very bad.

HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL!!!!! It sucked the sleeve out of the cyl and into the bottom!! Me and my dad just pulled it off, had a hard time, I felt like beating the crap outta it. I assume the sleeve was just to thin to take it. 13:1 425 must make alota heat!! If 180 is lean, hmm, Sparks told me to start out with a 165 with his 416, then i went to a 425 and kept bumping it up. The last sparkplug I took out looked rich, lots of deposits on it. hmmm. I am thinkin I will have to have a 440 sleeve put it, it kinda strached the cyl a little and I am wondering if a stock sleeve would stay in now. If a stock sleeve will stay in, I am going back to a stock piston and staying there. Screw all the high compression stuff.

If you are interested, I have a TMM built 440 stroker with 6 races and 10 practices on it. Complete with carb, rev box and exhust $2000

Evan
11-12-2002, 04:11 PM
hmm moneys kinda tight right now. but how much without carb, box and exhaust?

dawzie

comes complete only - you can sell the extra stuff

I have never heard of so much trouble with the 400 motor. Something has to be wrong.
Take it to Legacy and let them check it out. Maybe you should let them build it and see how it goes.

Warriorman your right something is wrong lol...

Everytime I keepin thinkin its somethin I done to wrong. The first time the valve floated, now I dunno what caused this........

may have been a simple as oil getting clogged. when was the last time you changed your oil?

dave

Evan
11-12-2002, 04:26 PM
less than 2 rides ago, I bet I had a tank of gas and a half ran on that oil change. But the oil was low, but not low enough to cause problems. I am thinkn though, what if the pump thing went out or soemthing

R-Crazy
11-12-2002, 05:20 PM
ya never know. could have just been something in the new oil filter you put in and it jammed everything up.

It sounds like it got too hot

(I.E. maybe bein rich)
Which made the piston stick. But to rip the whole cylinger down....hmmm.....

Is there any signs? is the piston still moveable inside the cylinder?

my guess is it over-heated, and the piston grabbed the cylinder down. Just a guess though.

( Could be an oil line clogged, the motor running lean)

Evan

I dunno could have been any number of things.
The sleeve is destroyed, its nothing more than a paper shell, only half of it is left.
Legacy is proably gonna build it back whenever I get some money. I just hope I can put a stock sleeve back in and not have to go to a 440 sleeve.

Evan
11-19-2002, 02:32 PM
Well I got the sleeve in the cyl and now all I need is to tear the bottom end apart and clean it. Lots of peices in there. Its going back stock though.

Stock Piston?

Evan

stock everything
yes stock piston, new rings though.

So your parting the 400 out huh?

Evan
11-30-2002, 06:43 PM
Yep, returning it to stock form, having the motor rebuilt.

Need anything? Most is gone, I do have stuff like a-arms, new head, and some other things.

Dave400ex
11-30-2002, 08:55 PM
Nope I don't need anything. Even if I did I don't have any money. lol
