Has anyone used the high octane aviation gas in their quad? Is it safe to use? Any performance difference?

I was told not to use it, because it is meant for high altitude. Thats about all I know about it.

av fuel is okay to use, just when you go to buy it. ask if they added anything to it. cause it should be like regular fuel. but some people add some stuff so it does not freeze, and its only 100 octane, and some lead in it too. but if you plan on buying it just ask if it has anything in it.

I'm a private pilot and in my estimation it would be rare to find 100LL that has had an anti-icing agent added to it before the point of sale. Usually the operator of the aircraft would do that as the plane is being refueled. I suppose in cold climates FBO's might added anti-icing agents to their supply. Still though, my guess is that's the exception not the rule. Plus, it's unclear to me if there would be any negative effect even if there WAS such an additive included.

Basically, I agree with you though. 100LL is a fine fuel to use despite all the uninformed hearsay so commonly thrown about.

Bear in mind that's ~100 MON (the spec for 100LL is a MON rating of 99.5 minimum but a typical sample will test out to a point or a couple higher than that). In pump gas terms (i.e. the average of MON and RON) 100LL would be rated more like 105.

WHy do you want to use aviation fuel? Let me guess, someone told you "it's da bomb, made 12 extra HP on my stock quad, no need for any other mods." Run race gas if you have the piston/motor work to warrant it. If not, just ride.

well maybe he wants to run it because there is not race fuel available in his area. and there is av fuel. and if he has a piston of say about 13 to 1 and instead of paying 10 bucks a gallon for good quality race fuel (and i know not all race fuel is that much, but some is!), he just payes 4 or 5 per gallon.

No race fuel in his area? THen why build a motor that requires it if you can't get it? If you go to the trouble of building a motor that requires race fuel, you sure as hell better be able to afford it. Ever hear of a place called VP fuels, the will ship it to your door.

I ran AV gas in my banshee all the time. Though some said not to, and the theory behind it made sense, I was young and broke so I ran it. Worked fine for me, never had any problems, and the two stroke loved the low lead!

What did the a/f graphs look like for each? Were each jetted accordingly or just run as it was.

av was alittle richer but not enough to change anything

both was between 13.5 & 14.0

hey, maybe he is strapped for cash, and its not like he is running 16 to 1 compression. and that fuel is enough.

and to get it shipped from vp is even more money.

I ran it in my quad with 13.1 compression when I couldnt get race fuel and that was a quite a bit, couldnt tell a difference in performance with that and race fuel, been told its not good by some people and others its fine. Had to put a new piston this winter but the guy who works on the motor said it was just normal wear and tear and it was due to for a new top end

i ran 100LL in my 300 for a while wiht my 11:1. Man i miss that smell. The 300 seemed to like it and when i tore her open it was cleaner then when i had been using pump fuel. More than likly because of the lead....

I too cannot get race fuel unless i buy form the dealer and there is no way i am paying $65 for a can of 105 vp.

well around here there's guys with race cars with $30,000 motor's in it running AV fuel so if it was "bad" for the engine i doubt they would be putting it in a motor that ex$$$$$

the cost of the fuel is why i run it.......i can get 5-gallons for $20 +it makes better power than the other 110 fuels i've tried.

heres one with the A/F.............doesn't need jet change at all
