I have a 2002 440ex with 11.5:1 compression, Stage 4 webcam (billet) w/ hardfaced rockers. I have the stock timing sprocket and a stock 400ex timing chain.

This thing loves to break the cam chain tensioners. Does anyone know of a remedy for this. at $50 a pop, im getting tired of replacing them after every other ride. Well....every tenth ride or so...:ermm:

Are you sure you are installing it correctly. Leave it backed off until everything is back together, then let it go to apply tension. THat is my only guess. Good luck, that is a tough one.

Assuming the tensioner is going in right ^^

Maybe a CRF450R cam chain would help? Maybe you'll need to find or make a manual cam chain tensioner?

Im putting the tensioner in the exact way my factory Hona service manual is telling me to.

I dont think the chain is stretched yet. I just replaced it last time the damn thing broke.

I was wondering if there were any other tensioners that would fit it. Like off of, say an XR650?

i agree with GPracer,
you should invest in a CRF chain. they are only around 30 bux from the local dealer. i had the same problem until i put this chain in

What is so special about the CRF450R's cam chain?

What makes it not break the tensioner?

Im just asking, because I dont want to waste that 30 bucks.:)

its thicker and is built to handle the horsepower of a 450 dirt bike, and it fits a 400EX. so its a great upgrade. as far as breaking tensioners, i think you are stretching chains and not realizing it. i went through 2 stock chains in 6 months and 3 tensioners before i bought this chain. oh, and BTW, i have an extra tensioner if you need one;)

Im gonna order the chain and two tensioners. My dad is gonna let me try the cam chain, but I really hope this solves my problems.:D
