I want to get a set of 18inch rear tires for mx. Which ones do you guy's recommend? I have 20in holeshots now but when they wear out I'm getting 18's I just want to know which is best for mx.

Turf Tamer, Hole Shot MX, or Maxxis MX. Its up to you to decide which tire you want. And it depends on what the terrain is. But the tamer i a good all around MX tire for hard packed dirt.

Groved tamers are for loose terrain. My friends track is mostly sand and they help a lot there.

In my opion turf tammers are the best that i ran,but dont get me wrong holeshots arre really good also, but the holeshots wear way to fast ,so my wallet cant keep up buying tires every other month so i stuck with turf tammers and love them

That deff says sumthing about them. The holeshots are nice but don't slide half as good as the tamers and i have yet to ride on the razars but i would still recommend the TURF Tamers

Do you just use a dremmel tool to groove the tamers?

Does anybody have any pics of grooved tamers?

I ran grooved tamers and liked em.
Get 9" wheels fo' sho'

I just bought all new Holeshots MX's, the new MXR's should be even better.
Id say wait for those.
Tamers arent 18"s, there 17"s and they give VERY little ground clearence

so i should go with the 9" rims for the 18x11x8 turf tamers???

they won't fit, you have to go with the 8" rims.

also does anyone have pics of the groved turf tamers???

thanks

tamers really dont need 9" wheels as bad as RAZR's or Holeshots.
Only holeshots are avaliable in 9" wheels sizes.
Bigger wheel also makes for a lighter combo!

Go with Holeshot's they are alotta better for mx. They are not nearly as good as my grooved MX Turf's the holeshot's work for one whole season of racing (no road). here's a pic of turf's and holeshot's

11-15-2002, 09:59 PM
one more turf's im sure u know what holeshots look like.

I will never EVER buy another set of tires after riding my Razr MX's. These things are absolutely AMAZING. 100% highly recommended.

I ran both MX Holeshots, and Turf Tamers....notice which one is in my signature as of today ;) I liked the MX Holeshots, but they wore down TOO FAST...after a weekend of riding I could already see a nice amount of tread gone. My Tamers are about 2 1/2 months old and still look like new. The way I look at it is Tamers are dirt cheap, last quite a long time, and their actually a very nice tire....that makes it a winner for me :blah

i would like to see the razor mx aswell???

also what size of rims do you run for the tamers as of mx proposes, 8", or 9" then???

i am going with the carbon fiber rims, dual beadlock, and am wondering if i should go with 8" or 9"...

thanks

I have had holeshots they did great for the loose stuff. but my track is hard pack and the turfs grip really great on it. I was thinking razr mx my 3rd time around to buy new mx tires but they arent that great for hardpack. If you ride loose stuff get the razr mx if you ride hardpack tracks get the turfs.

O or if you ride alot of hardpack and loose dirt i would say grooved turfs.

MX26
11-16-2002, 10:24 AM
They aren't great for hardpack? Oh... I thought they were pretty much the perfect tire... Guess I was wrong.. Since I ride on hardpack every time I go to the track..

Ask and ye shall recieve

well, ive had holeshots on all year and i would say they r pretty good. one has about 50% tread left the other about 60%. im not totally sure y they wear like that. but i have switched back and forth a couple times too. so, i am very pleased with the holeshots, i cant comment on the others, so i cant compare.

Im sorry i was just going by the review in dirtwheels. I like the razr mx i just wish i knew they where great for hardpack before i bought my turfs. O well i still saved a little. Thanks

11-16-2002, 11:50 PM
Im just saying stop putting ITP's holeshot's down when you have never tried only heard about them form othe rpeeps and review's! if you have never tried em then they shouldnt have a comment unless they sumthing about the tieres theyve used!holeshots are prolly the best tire out there and last one of the long lasting times!

Lathers,

I think you've got it switched pal. Tamers will last so much longer than the Holeshot MX's its not even funny. I ride on hardpack(3 out of the 10 tracks I go to are blackland) and I've seen guys go through 3 sets of MX's while I'm still running the same tamers. Holeshots do hook up, but I'm going to say that my Razrs probably hook up a little bit better. Unless ITP gets some longivety out of those tires, you'll never catch a set on my beadlocks. I can't afford to be spending over $100 every 10 races on new tires. Now for all of you guys that race 5 or 6 times a year, it might be worth the sacrafice, but I ride mostly every weekend. A set of MX's would last me about a month tops.

MX26, no beef but I've been running Holeshot MX's half the time on ASFAULT for about a YEAR+ and they still have 50% tread (on my 300ex). I dont put-put around either.
I had groved tamers and the lasted a lil less than a month on my R under the same conditions.
Then I ran UN-grooved tamers and they lasted much longer than non-grooved tamers, but still dont stand up to Holeshots in reliability.
I just bought New Holeshots all around for my R and Im glad I did (but I wish I woulda got the 19" fronts instead of 20"s)

I have no experience with Razr's (yet)

Well I guess we're comparing apples to oranges. Everyone knows 2 strokes(250R) has more wheelspin than 4 strokes(300EX) My Holeshots might be spinning 1/2 the time yours are hooking. See what I'm saying?

If you comenting on what i said lathers i have ran holeshot mx and they wore quick and didnt grip the greatest in my riding conditions. I prefer turfs for mine cheap and dont ware half bad when i had them.

bongwater200
11-17-2002, 08:26 AM
18x11-8 turfs for 4 strokes, 18x9.5-8 turfs for two strokes. Grooving is more or less for clay conditions to keep the tires from loading up with mud or sticky clay. Oh.... and don't waste your time with 9-inch wheels. 8x8 beadlocks will work with any rear tire you'll ever need.

Holeshots hook up well in a straight line, but don't corner that well, and performance drops quickly as they wear. BUT..... if you're looking for a good front tire and don't want to run radials, use the holeshot MX's. They wear too fast, but they work!

Lathers.......... reading your posts leaves me with two questions.

1- How old are you?
2- How long have you been racing quads?

You sound like some 15 year-old kid with a new computer. You like to tell people that they don't know what they're talking about.... well..... I've raced on almost every tire out there, so put that in your bong and smoke it!

Oh.... and by the way, learn how to spell a little better, will ya?

Can someone post some pics of groved truf tammers...and is it hard to groove them??

Sparks425Ex
11-17-2002, 01:44 PM
Well the way i see it. Turf Tamers is the only way to go. I have had everything Holeshot Mxs, Turf Tamers and Razar Mxs. The Turf Tamers hook up beter then either of the 2 and they also last longer they both others. Not to mention they are cheaper. I mean you can get a pair of Tamers for the price of a pair of Holeshot Mxs.

The price for the others is ridiculous. You might as well go with a better tire that last longer and is cheaper. That is the smartest thing to do.

When you groove Turf Tamers they do wear faster but not near as fast as the Holeshots and Razars.

Heres my Tamers. It isn't the best pic, I'll eventually get a good camera :D

As far as them hooking up good...oh yeah.. :)
I had a set of Holeshots ,and they wore down, so I went ahead and got new rims, and tires(the turfs, with ITP's).
I also used the stock Honda wheels with 20 inch razr's.

Plus, you can get Turf tamers new for CHEAP.

The way I did it was 1.) get old clothes on 2.) Get a grind wheel thats a big grit sand paper. You might want to buy a couple. 3) Go around the tire and do your pattern. It's a good idea to plan your pattern before you start any grinding.

11-18-2002, 08:35 PM
here are the holeshots that I have and they dont wear close to as much as turfs

11-18-2002, 08:53 PM
chill tha he!! out Lathers! What does it really matter what others think? You wont change other people's experiences with tires!
The tire depends 100% on what you ride. Tamers hooked up better in hard packed stuff for me, but holeshots stick in the softer stuff much better.
that's my experience, it wont change

It all depends we are all stating our opinions and not trying to be an *** about it like you. Good for you u like you holeshots that doesnt mean everyone else does. I didnt hate mine i just like turfs better that is for my riding condition. For whoever that wanted to know which was best i guess you will just have to go through and try them all but i would try turfs cause you cant got wrong for the price!

11-18-2002, 08:59 PM
What my point is CT is that Holeshot's dont wear as quick as ****, they wear just as quick as turf's if not they take a longer time to wear unelss ur out on the road burning and whelling.

Foxrage
11-18-2002, 09:18 PM
Exactly! you cant really tell on ware some may get rode more etc alot of different ways to go by it. I think most people are trying to get at is for turf tamers price its hard to beat.

11-18-2002, 09:24 PM
Yea true, i think we are startin to agree now, but also even if the price range is cheap for turf's and high for holshot's it must mean holeshot's are good tooo, also I wish people wouldn't say that they this and they that when they have never tried em tho, only heard form em from reviwes and stuff ya know??

I put on some 19 in Holeshot MX front and i road down the road real quick and back ( one tire was on the road and the right tire was in the grass) and when i came back i had like 50 % thread on my left tire. Ive had Razrs for bout 6 months now and they have bout 70 - 80% thread left. Just statin my opinion. Oh, and lathers...dont flame my post with your childish remarks, take it else where. This thread is for EVERYBODY to state their opinion of which 18 in mx tire THEY like best. It aint meant to start a flame war which obvisously you think it is.

. . .man you guys, normaly I only read the first 2 replys to posts that trigue my interest but I read all 4 pages of this one! LOFL! OMFG, you guys are yelling at each other, let me correct myself everyone was setting that one kid straight about turfs suck and holeshots are greatest tire ever made on the face of the earth! I say CT is right about riding cond., power of quad, and also style of riding! Anyways thanks for the laugh guys. LOL.

My question is though. . .I am going to get 20 inch turfs for the rear what is best tire in YOUR OWN opinion for the front? THis question has been boggleing my mind for liek 1 month now. If I get 20 Inch Turfs for the Rear "WHAT TO GET FOR TEH FRONT?"

Well anyways guys, thanks if you can answer it and thanks anyways for the laugh!

Lathers, its okay. Really, it is. Nobody is calling you a liar here, I'm just saying that WHERE I RIDE, they don't last long. That's all.

Bean
11-19-2002, 09:15 PM
technicly, i would expect holeshots to last longer, more knob and thicker knob, but thats me, anyway, holeshot mx's come in 8,9,10in rims

I've got Holeshots and i agree that they do wear fast. They are a soft compound rubber. i've ran tammers and i liked them too. I'm gonna give the Razr MX's a try next.
