When putting the new cam chain in is there a certain position the motor has to be in?

underpowered

yeah, TDC so you make sure the timing is correct.

when installing the chain itself it does not matter, but when you go to put the cam back in you need to make sure the engine is at TDC so you can get the proper timing

I beleive that it has to be on the compression stroke with the "T" mark visible in the side cover hole. You take the large plug out of the side cover, get the socket that fits that and a ratchet. then turn it. You also take the small plug out so you can see the marks.

Its actually a sideways T with a line either behind or infront of it.

I need to find my manual, then I can give you better directions and info.
