If you cant get maxima or bel ray,etc...,you can use SAE 10W-40 motor oil.Ive never used it,but thats what the R originally came with

Red Line lightweight shockproof gear oil. that stuff works wonders. Ran it in my 86 r which had never been split before and the thing looked bran new, not ware at all. that is just my 2 cents.. Honda oil works really well too that would be my second choice

I use a conventional 10 40 that works better than the Maxima I used to run. The Maxima seemed to break down in only a few hours of riding. The 10 40 I use works very well.

i'd rather use the oils that have no slip inhibiters/modifiers in them ie automotive

I use ATF type F in both my R's - seems good but there are lots of other good ones out there.

Do you have to change the fluid often to run atf? How often do you guys change the more expensive oils?

I change my oil after every or every other ride whether it be ATF or regular oil. I know a few people from PS with high hp bikes that use ATF and change at much greater intervals
