I just bought a 2005 450R. I was told it just had the top end rebuilt (5 hrs running time). It starts within 2 kicks and has great power, but smokes on inital start-up. When it warms up it doesnt smoke at all. I got a great deal on it....you can see on ebay, item # 110198873204. Do you guys think it valve seats or what?

When I bought my 07 brand new it did the same thing. It didn't smoke bad but did until warmed up. I asked service tech at honda and he said that was normal (bothered me though). Since i've changed exhaust and jets and doesn't smoke anymore.

Smoking on start up is an indication of bad valve Guides/Seals. The oil sits in the top of the motor when off leaks through seals down in the valves and piston. It is burned off during start up. Its not crucial to get this fixed but you will start to oil foul your plugs and get build up on the piston. Does it say what color the smoke is? this may also indicate a rich condition on the low end.

If it was a jetting issue wouldnt it do it all the time? Where is the best place to bring the head to? Any idea on what kind of cost I am looking at to replace the seats and guides?
