I have been thinking about selling my 400ex to buy a 450r. Currently I have a 04 400ex that is pretty much stock, just has nerfs, exhaust, and k&n filter. I rode my buddies 450's and they just rip, so much more power. What would you guys do? keep the 400ex and mod it out, or sell and get the 450r?

Sell the 400 and get a 450.... you won't be sorry... matter of fact... you can buy my 05!!!

had the same issue... but you cant beat a 400ex... if you dont like to do maintanence then keep the 400.

the 450r is fast but i had alot of fun with my 400 too... it was alot easier to ride wheelies and stuff on the 400..

i guess it depends on what you want to do.. both have their place

get the 450, why buy a 400 when you can get a 450, plus if you take care of a 450 they will last just as long as a 400, and the 450 are better all around quads imo.

12-08-2007, 08:36 PM
like i said for playing around, cruising trals or stuff like hat in general 400ex is best. 450r is a race machine and needs to go fast. You could drop a tooth on the front for trails but I still think 400ex is trails and 450r is track.

I would sell the 400ex and get a 450r just becuase its better to put money into a quad you know you are going to have a long time then something that you will get rid of eventually becuase of size.

Wow alot of people agree with me lol.

actually it was just the same person like 3 times and one other that agreed, but I agree with comment above as well . Get rid of the 400ex. They are decent bikes and reliable but it just gets to the point that you cant do what you wanna do on some things with it. The 450r is all around a better bike. And if you leave it stock its not a problem to trail ride. I never had a single problem on a trail w/ it and i never dropped a tooth. Is it geared for racing....yeah but unlike a 2 stroke you can run low revs and not foul a plug. I love mine and so far have chosen it over any other bike I have ridden. The maintenance.....in 2 years i lost the bike in the ocean for 15 min. and rode it for months after without changing the oil. Just recently put in a high compression piston, cam, air filter and exhaust but the internals were still perfect and looked new. Good luck with your choice.

lol yea bloodmoney I was just screwing around when I said that but you lost your quad in the ocean? wtf?

I was in the army and stationed in Hawaii. We always rode on this beach on north shore called mokulea. Well i was riding the shoreline and showing off (not recomended to do) when a wave smacked me and knocked me off bike and in seconds my fourwheeler was somewhere in ocean . About 15 minutes went by and my buddy saw it about 20 ft out caught on the reef. It took like 7 of us to get it in. I let it sun dry for a couple hours then hopped on and rode it some more.

i think the front end on the 400's are way to light. For a bigger rider its almost better to extend the swingarm to keep the fronts on ground better. But yeah i love my 450. It handles a lot better. Just if you get 04 or 05 make sure you get at least an aftermarket linkage cause they have a serious leverage problem.

That's all your opinion. I'd say keep the 400, if you're not a serious racer and are just gonna race a few races for fun then keep your ex. Put some +1 Houser a-arms, 450R front shocks (get those and your rear shock rebuilt by C&DRacing). You are just gonna do this to a 450 anyway although the 450r has a lot of power the 400 has plenty of potential! Get a high comp. piston stage 2 hotcam and some port and polish on your head and you'll see an extensive power increase. Maybe not a full 450 but good power for trails and the track! The 450's don't want to be ridden slow they need to be opened up so for regular trails they aren't the best choice IMO! Keep your 400ex and modify. ;)

yeah it is my opinion....thats what hes asking for is everyones opinion. and the only bikes that NEED to be opened up are 2 strokes.

I agree completly. The 450 is a OK trail bike if the trails are open enough to keep the clutch out. If its tight technical stuff the 450 is hard to trail ride. It is a all around better bike (power, suspension, etc) but if you are not racing or at least riding hard you wont really notice it. Again this is just my opinion, but I have had numerous 400ex's (and loved every one) and have 2 450r's now (and wont ever have another 400ex). But I ride pretty aggressive and I dont do a lot of tight trail riding. I wouldnt worry about maintenance to much, I have rode the #$%@ out of my 450's and havent had anything other than oil changes done to them!!! Please no angry responses these are just my views

Also unless you plan on racing, the 400ex has enough power!!

I say 450. I have two , an 04 & 07 + a 300ex,250ex & a 90. All Honda but not all red:p The 04 blew up & had the motor rebuilt & never buy the extended warranty.

I don't want a the same quad for a long time - use it for 3-4 years - dump it & get another one. So may people are selling for alot of reasons. If you buy used get one only 1 or 2 years old & never pay more than trade -in value:)

Enjoy whatever you have cause no matter what , we all have the same passion - work is over rated & all we want to do is ride............................ Yea Baby

honda8&3 if you have ever riden a 450r you would know that they are great for just about anything. Dont take what one person put and retype it like everyone else did when they said a 400ex is bettter for trails beucase whoever started that rumor is a retard. Right now all I do is trail ride and mines at 50 inches becuase I am racing it next year and i have no problems with it there and I ride some pretty rough trails. If you know how to ride you dont need to clutch it constantly or if youve ever riden one you would know.

i didn't start the rumor, but i will say that for the nice tight trails i have here in northwest pa, the 400ex is much better...the 450r is high strung...it needs to rev high ALL the time. the 400ex can be lugged around much easier. like i said, until i spent a lot of money on the suppension for the 450r, i was much more comfortable on the 400ex. so much that, until i did spend the $$$, i thought i had made the biggest mistake to that point in my life. as far as riding hard...yes it is great when that can be done all the time, but it simply can't...i can't hit some of the 20" logs at full speed, especially when i am following the wives or my father in law on his 300 utility. it has gotten better since i have put on the wb exhaust, but it is still not as easy to ride with them as the 400ex was.

roadridin450r...as far as being a good rider...i have been riding since before you were even born...by about 4 or 5 years...and i have both a 450r and a 400ex in my garage right now...

if you plan on running at full speed the whole time you are on the bike, then the 450r is for you...if you frequently run at lower prm for any reason. then the 400ex is a much better bike...

Speedyquad- Never said you werent a good rider and I wasnt even picking you out I was mainly talking to honda8&3 but I thought oil city was near kintanning and isnt that like southwest or close to mid PA?

THis is what id like to get, its s 04 450r with all the goodies I would ever put on it. Its in the ATV For Sale Thread. This quad is a wet dream. hahaha

12-13-2007, 02:47 PM
OC is about 50 miles south of erie and 80+ some north of pittsburgh...

i know you weren't singling me out, but the way you put it made it seem like all of us who think the ex is a better trail bike are non-skilled retards...i just had to stand up for our opinion...

there are many times that i have taken the ex out instead of the r if the wife isn't going...

I think the above statement pretty much sums up what quad you really want... also if the modded 450 is what you like you'll never be happy with an EX simply because you'll have to bore the motor to produce the same amount of power a stock 450 already has.... And not always but most of the time when you start to bore things you mess with the reliability of it......

AGAIN NOT TO START AN INTERNET ARGUMENT.... IMO :D

P.S. The quad is only as agile and good in trails as the rider!!!

Love my 450..... not a fan of a friends 440ex....

without boring it out, it would probably take several thousand dollars for a 400 to run with a stock 450, on the track, take them to the trail and it would be all rider, because the 450 has the power, but get them in a tight section and the guy on the 400 will probably win because the 450 stalls alot easier and is kickstart, plus it is picky about how you kick it when it stalls out in hot weather. honestly, i prefer the 450 because it has the high revving serious power feal like the 250f dirtbikes i used to ride. i used to think that my dads 390ex had plenty of power, until i rode the 05 450r we picked up yesterday. the 450 is bone stock except a wb muffler, nerfs and a bumper, i could run with my dad at 3/4 throttle easily just short shifting, and when i get on the throttle i am gone, i cant even see him. (btw, my dads 390 eats 400s) go for the 450 for sure, you will not regret it, unless of course you cant kickstart a bike.
