Just curious...Anyone have any experience or info of this?
Is it avalible for the TRX motor? Does anybody else do this?
Looks like it could be an alternative to an aftermarket oil tank.

cant remember who but someone on here got this done and if i remember right it really helped with keeping it cool. he said something like when they were testing it they had to turn off the fans to let the engine warm up. do a search for cooling fins or maybe someone will know who did it.

i believe oldnumberseven has them

Yeah Oldnumber7 has them. He was getting his 465 dynoed, and the Fins helped so much they had to turn off the fans to get it up to temperature for the dyno. I think they would be a lot better then an Oil Tank and the FST Cooler. Get some Scoops with them and that would rock. Plus they look sweet.

Wow, why didnt I think of that. LOL

I see a major problem though. Put your thinking caps on for a sec.....>

Looks to me that the fins are so wide, you wouldnt be able to slide thje head off and lift it between the frame rails that are underneath the gas tank. That would mean the motor would have to be taken out of the frame before you could slide the head off the headbolts.

Anyone comments??:(

Now that is one only Oldnumber7 can answer.

Although that could be true, how often do you really need to disassembly your motor? :p I think the added benifits of a cooler motor make up for the little bit of extra time you need to spend to work on it ;)

Man thats nice! I just might need to do that!!

Dave400ex

Chad that would look sweet on your Motor. Plus help cool the monster. It's even kind of polished.

ChadEXer
11-11-2002, 04:51 PM
I will probably look into doing that pretty soon! I almost sent my entire motor off to be polished!! A polishing shop would have polished every square inch of the motor including the bolts and all for $700!!! Thats not bad but it is a lot of money and keeping it up would be heck!!! I think since I got all the polishing supplies now I might try it myself!!

holly shiz, 700 dollars, I just did my whole motor my self. It took alot of work. The paint on the side case is tough.

ChadEXer
11-12-2002, 09:50 AM
Do you know what will take the paint off the cases??? I have heard its hard to find something that will take it off! Does anyone know of something that will take the paint off for sure??? I would use sandpaper but the less scratches you put in the aluminum the easier it will be to polish!!! And that way would take forever too!

MAYBE AIRCRAFT STRIPPER FROM HOME DEPOT:D

Sick0
11-12-2002, 01:51 PM
the aircraft stripper doesn't work that good. I used it and it bearly put a dent in it. I end-up sanding most of it with 600grit wet/dry. Pain in the ***.

ChadEXer
11-12-2002, 02:11 PM
Is 600 course enough??? Seem like you should start with like a 220 or 320??? Did you wet sand it or dry sand it???

Find someone with a plastic media blaster. You can take baked epoxy paint off, and not bother the anodize finish underneath. Some larger auto body shops use plastic "grit", also aircraft parts repair shops.

The best thing to get the epoxy paint off of the side cases is hydrulic fluid. I said to he?? with it and bead blasted mine then had them polished.

That is one of the cleanest 400ex motors I have ever seen? How do you do it?

I contacted XR over the week. They said the mod decreases temp up to 30 degrees.

I have yet to have one of my questions answered...."Does the motor have to be taken off the frame in order to get the modified head on and off the motor?"

YZROOSTINYA

yes, at least you will have to pull the oil tank and all parts and tip the motor forward. it barely fits through the frame as it is

Thank you for your reply, YZ.:)

Look at the photo above..of course you have to pull the motor.

Honestly if you do not run your bike at constant high revs I would not recommend the big fins. The motor needs the right amount of heat to produce peak power. For a motor that is modded heavily and ridden hard for long periods the head works well, for a stock to lighty modded motor (ie standard 440 bore 10:1 or 11:1 piston) the head will only rob power from your motor. The ideal use for this mod is for Duning and Desert racing where high speeds are held for long priods of time.

Hey Old#7, do you have a pic of that orange frame bike all put together?

I'm just wondering because i'm buying an orange frame, and would like to see some of the same. I kinda don't know whats gonna match with orange. tnx.

Im going to see how mine runs when I put it on alky, and if it still runs hot then Im going to seriously consider doing that!! But I think the alky will put it to perfect running temp!!

Nakomis, here is my friends R with a orange frame,,,the pics sucks and its sandy(just came back from Little Sahara) but its very trick!!

so if it would run too cool when your mxing or racing in the woods with this fin kit what if i had xrs weld only 3 fins on mine instead of all six would that then let my engin run at a better temp then it shouldn't be to cool nor to hot somone let me know cause i've been kicking this around

Well, if it was that obvious, I would not have asked the damn question.

What did it cost to do the head mod Old7? What I'm thinking is, that would probably help me alot, racing TT. There is hardly ever a time, during a race, that my RPM's go below 8000...

hey #7 what's your opinion if i only weld three fins on do you think the motor will still run to cool

ya, they look ugly as sin and the first time you power wash you bike you have to replace them cause for some reason i just don't think that the silicon they provide with the kit is goin to hold them on:rolleyes:

Alky, I think I paid about $250.00 for it.

Ugly, I think you would end up with cool/hot spots......what might work really well is to have the fins welded on the milled down a 1/4 inch more than XR Only's standard lenght.

My 300ex looked even better than that when i sold it. The trick is a tooth brush, engine degreaser, rubbing alcohol, and lots of time. You go through a lot of shop rags in the process too. Its sure is worth it though. Makes them look brand spankin new again.
