View Full Version : Pain sucks

I wasn't at work 10 minutes yesterday when my back went out. I spent an hour on the floor until I could get the muscles to loosen up enough to let the guys get me up and to my car.

It was 1996 or 97 the last time it went out this bad but I think this is more severe. I know the docs will just want to operate but have been advised to use that as a last resort. So for now its bed rest (not sure how to rest when the pain wont let up)

This is the first time the kids have seen me like this, they were pretty scared seeing me down like this but got a laugh when I asked which one was going to help me in the bathroom:eek: I did not get a volunteer and heard the sound of doors shutting so I assume they had better things to do:p

Today I can start using heat so I will be up and down as it starts to loosen up. What pisses me off the most is that we are getting fresh snow today and some of the best hunting will be when it stops. I can barely wipe my own *** much less climb a treestand or raise my rifle:mad:

Oh well, just wanted to vent and wallow in my own self pity:blah:

Sorry to hear about your back problem. I watched my dad suffer lying in bed for a week at a time at least once a year. I am not sure what was worse...the back or the boredom.

BTW, I hear there is a big deer party going on in WV now! :D

Sorry to hear about your back. My dad has had the same problem for years and it has really affected his quality of life. He is in tremendous pain when it goes out...in fact I think it's the only time I have ever seen him shed a tear. His doc suggested surgery to fuse a couple of vertebrae together but he refuses to have it done. (I don't blame him one bit) Lately he has been doing exercises that seem to help but still ends up hurting himself now and then...sometimes for no reason at all.

Anyhow...hope it heals up soon. Sounds like its time for some good pain meds.:bandit:

My dad had the same problems, I watched him many times crawl into the house.

It feels like an electrical shock when it hits, and when that isn't happening it is a dull pain much like a toothache right at the waist line.

The fusing of discs isnt an option due to the discs in that area being damaged.....they want to do something higher up but can't garuntee me it will help the lower back problem.

lol i was a late for lineup at redbud practice this year at the national and he went to start my quad and he pushed down instead of forward.. needless to say he was laying in the trailor for a good hour pissed off he couldnt move.

I know what you mean. My dad had literally pulled himself into house with his arms while on his stomach. The pain must be pretty bad because he would just lay there for hours once he got inside the door. His description of the pain is almost exactly what you said. I feel lucky I didn't inherit the problem from him. I think my back is the only good part left on me. :o

Apparently the cushions between a few of the vertebrae are totally gone in his back and aside from fusing there is little they can do. So...they stuff him full of pain meds and give him some exercises to do and send him out the door.

I feel for ya Ken...after years of knee problems I have become all too familiar with pain. Luckily after having knee replacement things have been much better since. Gotta love titanium knees.:D I can't imagine having that kind of pain in my back though.

My wife is having this problem she found out this summer after having a pinched nerve and could barely bend over she when to the chriopractor and xrays showed no cushion between the lower vertebrae. :ermm:

Sorry to see you laid up Ken been there before thankfully it has happened in at least 4 years..

Go to a chiropracter Pappy. Do not let them touch you with that knife! I have a friend that serious back issues and they wanted to do serious surgery on him..... He said, no thanks and started going to a chiropracter to see if they could straighten him up. He now says he feels the best he has felt since he was a kid and swears he'll never let them operate on him.

I feel your pain Pappy, I've got back problems also. I've also been told I need surgery but I'm holding off as a last resort, especially since I just had surgery on my shoulder this last summer.

Have you done any physical therapy or have exercises/stretches to do at home? My back felt 100x better after going to physical therapy for a month. They strapped me to a machine that would pull my body in opposite directions to stretch out my spine. Sounds like a torture treatment but it was the best feeling ever, as soon as it started pulling it was instant pain relief. Now whenever my back acts up I do what's called a "cat stretch" and it helps somewhat. Just have to take it easy for awhile and make sure to stretch and lift properly.

That sucks man. There's nothing more debilitating than back and neck pain.

I'll be praying for a speedy recovery.

Ouch ! Sorry about your back.

Freshman year of high school a kid grabbed my neck, he ended up pinching a nerve or something, it was horrible. It took a little to set in. Once it did I couldn't move at all it was so bad. I just laid in bed all day. Took about 3-5 days for it to start getting better.

12-05-2007, 02:11 PM
sorry to hear about that. I had the same problem like a year ago when i put my back out. I couldnt breathe when i stood up or tried to sit down. I hope you get better man.

Sucks to hear Pappy, get well soon.

A couple years ago in my old house my dad was carrying a fridge down to the basement. While he was walking down the stairs both of his knees gave out and him and the fridge fell down the stairs and he got trapped under it. Kinda funny but not really. He has had knee surgery on both now.

My neighbor is a doctor that used to specialize in very severe back problems. He lived in Switzerland for several years, and they sent him all the difficult patients.

I'll see what kind of advice I can get, because he never operated on people, he rehabilitated them.

Chiropractors aren't the people to see when you have back problems, they may make it feel better but they never solve the problem. Physical therapy helped a lot and let me know exactly what I can do to help the pain.

Wilkin - you'll have to let me know also...I'm definitely not looking forward to surgery on my back. Probably going to wait until after I'm done with school to get that done.

oh man dont you know it. we got 5 inches of snow today and i was foaming at the mouth watching it all day. it was perfect weather for hunting, and this evening and tomorrow should be the best weather so far this season but i cant do a 2 hour drive to hunt although i am planning on driving the ranger to my woods. we can only kill a doe but its hunting and now that cody can gut, skin and butcher himself, the hard work can be handled by him. i doubt this morning i could have even lifted my rifle:( ive been doing exactly what i should be...NOTHING for 2 days. i just got up for the first time that did not feel like i had no back muscles so thats a good sign. im not shaking any more when standing but i still have to walk with my right shoulder held high and my chin on my chest:huh weird how much affects your back.

i cant imagine what this will be like in 15 or 20 years. i know the docs told me to exercise and such but that hurts my back as well, but maybe after this i will have to do something because i know carrying extra weight doesnt help. up to a few weeks ago i was still lifting 60,000 lbs a week at work (exercise...i know ...lol) the doc says i have huge muscles in my back and shoulders and when my spine compensates for its injury my muscles go into spasms which is what this was. ( i know nick..more water...lol) all i know is it puts me down but thankfully its just a few days of soreness, but this time it has been 2 days of outright pain. i geuss a trip to the docs would have yeilded some meds but ibuprofin will have to do.

i watched from my lazy boy all day on the far ridge. rifle was next to my chair. the wife would have had to open the window but i doubt i could have leaned over enough for the shot. the past hour or so has been good, ibuprofin must be kicking in and the swelling going down because i can walk ok but still cant twist.

Thats good, My dad has bad back pain and I know how bad he feels after his back gives him problems.

Hope you get better. Try not to have surgery, When I was at the physical therapist (sP?) There was a guy with back surgery that has been going there 3 times a week for the last year!:eek2:

I guess when you have a toothache you go see a foot doctor???

id have to agree, they got my wife straightened out and she was in some serious pain prior to them working on her. with me, they just refuse to touch me because they feel they could do me more harm then good due to the discs that are damaged in my back.

maybe ill take up bike riding, i have agood frame tos tart a build:devil:

Chiropractors go to school for 5 1/2 years.....2 years undergrad and 3 1/2 chiropractic school. I know this for a fact because I did my undergrad and decided not to go to chiropractic school. I had a feeling that me and the public wouldn't mix day in and day out.

Pappy I know exactly what you mean. I felt horrible on monday after yard work in 30 degree weather and then laying carpet in my basement....doesn't help a back either

Good to hear you're able to get up and around a bit, just don't over do it. It sucks to miss a great hunting time but it would be worse to never be able to hunt again:)

Hoping for a speedy recovery:)

Back when i was 16 my back was so bad that it took me about 3 mins to get up out of bed. I had to slowly get off my bed and once i was standing took another minut to stand streight. I almost gave up on quading till 6 months lator the pain was finaly gone. Then now 2 years lator I lifted a snowmobile and got a real bad pain in my back and couldnt streighten out for a good 5 mins then got on the snowmobile with my friend to go back to his house and the retard hits a 2ft jump with me on it coming out of a field at 55mph. :eek2: That hurt.

That's from your sciatic nerve being pinched in your lower back. I have the same problem except it's with my left leg.

As for the chiropractors, they may be specialized but they never seem to solve your problems. I, along with many other people, have gone to chiropractors and they make you feel good while you're there but they never help you actually get better. After going to a physical therapist for a month I feel I'll never need to go to a chiropractor again, especially after I have surgery.

speaking of pain I was putting on atv tire the other day, apparently the last guy to remove it tore some cords in the bead area, well I was airing it up to set the bead and that mofo came unglued, lifted the bead right up over the rim, my hand was pretty much felt like I blew up a firecracker in it, now my pinky is pretty much whacked, i been keepin it taped to the ring finger, thats the second tire incident I have had in like 2 or 3 years and i really hate it, I had a holeshot blow the tread area out while seating the bead, but this was worse. ask my why I was having my hand near the tire while seating the bead? well my clip on air chuck came loose and i reached over and was resetting it, the rim left a mark in the shop floor and its concrete. so peeps be cautious with tires.

dave, it loosened up about 1pm. i took it eay all day and slept most of this evening with nothing but ibuprofin. it amazes me how when it hits, it just wipes the energy from you. i geuss from the body working so hard...weird stuff.

matt, i fully understand. we discussed today that both times my back has gone completely out was right after periods where i stopped lifting. both times i had a new warehouse crew and i wa able to stop being the heavy(i lift anywhere between 300,000 and 700,000 pounds of batteries per week) i wonder if it has to do with the sudden stop of heavy use of the back muscles as everyone around here suggests. all i know is it hurts to do anything including trying to rest.

My friends dad has bad back pains and he goes to this hardcore chiropractor and has found it to work very well!

What they do is put you completely under and go to town on ur back, when you wake up, he says it hurts like hell but the next day its just a little sore and then the pain is virtually gone. You should look into something like this, i think he goes a couple of times a year so its nothing permanent but they also dont cut you open which is a plus.
