when i got my quad the guy told me it was a 440, it has a full pro circuit exhaust uni filter and the air box lid removed, but it dosen't seem anything special compared to my friends kfx with a slip on and a cdi. it has writing on the cylinder where they had worked on it but how can i tell if it is a 440 without tearin it apart?

I have a suzuki with a 2004 440 kit full alba exuast uni filter and a dynatech cdi. One of the guys i ride with has a honda 400 with a slip on and i walk on that thing all day long. then my other buddy has a honda 450r with the honda racing kit and mine is just a little slower in like a 200 yard race. If he gets a bad start ill take him. i bought mine with the 440 in it and I just got my piston replaced and there is only numbers on the piston head so i didnt even know what kind of 440 kit it was but a wisco worked. But the only way i can think of is take the piston head off and compare it to a 400 piston head there is a very noticable differents. Lots of work though!!!!

check your valves and also make sure your carb is jetted right for the aftermarket stuff, also what gearing are you running?

there is a rather simple mod you can do ,change the intake boot to some thing that will breathe, a bit better, first one that comes to mind is the 400ex air boot, even the 450r boot is do able but you will have to loose the air box. or at least remove most of the front of the box
heres a pic comparing the Z to the ex http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9/cataway/9-21-2007LS027.jpg

and a pic of the 450r boot and a Z boot

come to think about it i have a 400ex boot and this bracket i made ,i dont use it any more as i put the 450r boot on which required a different bracket , this little mod gave me 2 more hphttp://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9/cataway/3-28-2007LS263.jpg

installed it would look some thing like this

or of coarse you could just shorten the ex boot and install it on your stock box , how ever you do it its going to help.
