I'm new to the atv thing and I am getting ready to buy a new 400 ex. I was just curious on what octane rating I should run in the quad.

If I remember right, on the ID label on the frame, it calls for 91 octane. Anyone know for sure?

I personally would run nothing less than 90 or nothing higher than 94.

you can run regular... on stockers!... The worst thing you might have to change plugs more often... I wouldnt really worry. (Our regular octane is 89)

I run nothing but 93 octane. Oh yeah welcome to Exriders.

it doesnt go through much gas so just get premium. Thats what i do. In the manual its says that 91 or 92 is minumum but that is one of the ratings not both of them averaged(u know how to get the final octne there are 2 numbers). Some of you smart guys that know about gas know the name for it. help me out:blah

since its gonna be stock im guessing u can run 87 and it will be fine, but when u run higher octane it seems to be more peppier..I personally have to run at least 93 or mine spits and sputters but i also got alot of motor work.So it all depends on what the mods are

*** My 1999 manual says 92 octane or higher for my 400ex ***

I always ran either 93 or Sunoco 94.

Welcome to the site, and good luck with your new purchase!:)

How much does that normally run you?

I am thinking of the 416 with 11:1 comp, and I think I am gunna have to mix some of that and I was wondering what price to expect to pay.

If both quads are 11-1 and under your wasting your money with race gas. I did a race gas dyno run and a 93 octane run on a 11-1 motor and it didnt make anymore HP. On less compression engines it will actually slow the bike down due to the slower burn rates.

I have always ran airplane fuel which is leaded but has always run strong and it is what I run in my oulling trucks and race trucka and is only about$15-$20 at your local airport!

my 440 runs like a champ, better than pump its also high compression. my other 400 i just put it in cause it pulls harder and the way i have the carb set up.

With everything mentioned here, yes eating your Wheaties will give you more of a gain then running race fuel in stock bikes. If you dont have 12-1 or higher dont waste your money.

VP says you should not run airplane fuel, it is not designed to handle varried RPMs.
