How is an aftermarket grab bar mounted to the EX- welded?
I am looking at the wide Pro Armor grab bar. I am guessing the old bar will need to be cut off first?

It wouldn't be welded. I have seen some 400ex grab bars that are installed with U-bolts (corrected) on your subframe. You could cut your stock one off and weld on some nuts to use a 250r or 300ex grab bar I believe.

Most cut off the stock and weld on some mounts for 250r grab bars. Others have 250r subframes on their ex's.

yea.. its a pain.. you can get a new subframe for it.. and noty have to go through all the welding.. the sub frame uses 250r grab bars.. the subframe is like 350 or a little more.. its kinda expensive.. i think any one would get it.. im waitning to break mine before i go buy a new one :D.. i plan on getting the new subframe..

Sub Frame - Honda 400EX $370.00

The replacement sub frames for the Honda 400EX will fit the stock or LSR frame. They are offerd in two styles, with or without battery mounts. All sub frames use a 89 Honda 250R style grab bar.

Did you have to cut the OE grab bar off? I can see it, but I am not sure if the end has been cut off.

It uses U-bolts (which is what I meant in my previous post, oops). The U-bolt just holds the new grab bar to the frame, and I think you can leave the stock grab bar intact.

do you do a lot of jumping ? have you ever bent your axle yet with those spacers on cuz the axle looks pretty straight ? i had some spacers on mine and rode it for 5 minutes and bent the axle and almost snapped it.

do not cut.... just bolts on with 4 u-bolts you can move it around about 1" back and forth - mine sits right up against the back of the frame, they are hard to find but here is one on ebay but it is a cooler type:

just make sure it has the wide area so it bolts up using the u-bolts see pics on ebay. hope this helps,

and here comes the newbie bringing it back form the dead. lol

the 87 rpm products 250r grab bar. does it have the tabs on it to hold the tail light like the 400ex grab bar does??

im going to cut mine off cause it is bent and want to replace it with a nice one. obviously a custom job on how it will be mounted but i just want to see if it has tabs on it for the tail light

I like that grab bar you got off ebay. You think its strong enough to hold on if your pulling something? Like, lets say a person on a sled, in the snow?

01-30-2009, 11:52 AM
yes...it is like the prm grab bars...

pulling someone one sled would actually have you wrapping the rope around the stock grab bar/subframe also...

you can see the stock grab bar in these pics:
