you need a usb mouse and keyboard btw. And it works very well for browsing the web with the built in firefox. It also has a pretty robust office suite.

It could easily replace your regular computer. It just wasnt what i needed for web/photo stuff.

I would suggest yellow dog linux or ubuntu. google is your friend.

*** Gotta have an HDTV to or else it will get really complicated.

you will have to get a new controller, but the games are ok. the ps3 uses controllers wirelessly only.

also is it more likely to get a virus this way?

It will not replace your XMB. It will run under a hypervisor to protect the ps3 from any damage. A virus is very unlikely and if you were to mess up you can simply reboot into the XMB and format your hard drive so your ps3 is like new.

Linux has programs to replace just about anything windows can do.

Gaim = AIM
Oppenoffice = Microsoft Office
GIMP = Similar to Photoshop

Its all free too. Linux can be more complicated though but its starting to get simpler.

One thing i wanna add is that some people may find it running a little slow. But im comparing it to my pretty high end computer. It also does not use the ps3's graphics card just yet which slows it down a bit.

they make adapters so you can plug in playstation 2 controllers into the usb in the front of the ps3. ive never used them but i guess they dont work well for the playstation 2 guitar hero controllers.

im not quite sure but i think u will only be access linux through command lines and then have to do some modifications to let it run at the lower resolution... never done it myself.

another question about ps3, but on the 40 gig version is it backwards compatible as in it can play PS1 and PS2 games? I read something online the other day and it said you couldnt.. But ive read other things that say you can?
