rear axle play

i was washing my bike today and noticed i can slide the rear axle back and forth in side the rear carrier about 3/16 of an inch.

what would cause this

I had the same problem too, I believe it was the bearings but make sure your axle locknut is tight before you do anything.

Side to side is axle lock nut...

i dont see how them nuts could back off though
