Hows the power for a v6? Does it get up and go? How about towing? Do they come in a 5 speed? Ive only seen them in autos. Any problems? Thanks.

Try to find 2000 and up! Problems are wheel bearings and ball joints! Available in auto and 5 speed.

I own a 99, my dad has a 2000, and two good friends of mine have 97 and 98. Yes they come in 5spd. 16-21mpg depeding on habits and tires. 190 or 195 HO HP, 3.73 gears. I love mine, and yes I use it hard. From what I've done you can probably pull 5000 lbs without being too bad off. 7000 is a bit much, I tried, it did it though

ive got a 93 s-10 not the zr2 but power wise its slower than molasses in a freezer. mines the 4.3 v6 auto, im about to put a nice set of headers and an exhaust on it and probably an intake of some sort hoping for some more power... they have alot of torque, especially in wet or snowy roads so keep an eye out for that but, other than the slowness factor i love mine

The later ones are a different motor setup, a 4.3 but different intake, like 98-up is all I would own, but i had an 89 s15 jimmy and it got around good for non vortec and I could get 18 mpg running backroads, and it withheld my younger beating the piss out of things years.

Consumer reports puts them as one of the worst used vehicles to buy...;)

We have owned 2 and 3 of my close friends have ZR2s as well and we all absolutely love them! I've been trying to find one for my self. As far as towing and over all power the v6 does great, our last zr2 use to tow a 16foot enclosed with 3 quads to the races every weekend and didn't mind it. :macho With a good set of tires they will go just about anywhere! Oh how fun ours was in a snowy field... Only gripes I've herd anyone having really is if you get one of the few that were beaten, 4 wheeled or were lemon.

Does the Ford Ranger have an off road package similar to this?

Consumer reports also doesn't recommend Toyota automatically anymore, but who's going to listen to that?

The 4.3 is a very reliable and powerful engine. Could've been better on the economy side but you can get decent mileage with them if you're easy on the gas. If Consumer Reports doesn't recommend those trucks then I probably will never listen to anything they say again.

Our Bravada with the 4.3 Vortec pulls an 18' trailer with 5 quads like it's pulling nothing. It's also got over 200K on it and besides the EGR needing to be cleaned/replaced (we just unplug it) it runs great. Our '90 S10 4.3 had 250K on it and ran like a top before my brother wrapped it around a twin solid steel post mailbox cemented into the ground.

I never listen to Consumer reports, as a matter of fact I dont read it ever, because I dont agree with thier American car bashing.

I have a '99 S-10 I have owned it since new. I love this truck and will not ever get rid of it. It has the 4.3 with an Auto trans, and about 150k miles. Its my work truck now and I have a new Silverado but I still drive the S-10 90 percent of the time. I think if you find a good one you'll be very happy with it.

my buddy has a zr2...im not sure the year but its a fun truck. Its actually pretty damn nice and goes offroad pretty decently actually. Dual exhaust and an intake, its actually pretty quick. I would buy one for sure.

I had a 94 zr2 back in 97 and loved it. Mine was a reg cab wich was rare around here most were ext cab.
I do have to say my curent 98 Tacoma is a better built truck and gets better millage. But the zr2 is a great truck for a small truck.
If you plan to tow much I would look into a full size.
I never tried to tow with the zr2 but with the Tacoma I tow a 13' inclosed v nose and with 2 quads, you have to watch and remember the wieght. Its not so much the power its the stoping, the trucks are really light

We've never had an issue with stopping anything with our 4.3's. Sounds like Toyota cheaped out on the braking department;) . I've pulled a half ton truck on our 18' trailer with my dad's Blazer (2.62:1 rear end) and it pulled it no problem and braking wasn't an issue as long as you didn't have to slam on your brakes.

Yes in older trucks the STX package, in newer ones the FX4 level II.

I had a 97 STX, it had 3.55 gears with LS rear end, factory lift (not as high as a ZR2) but 31x10.5x15 were standard size. With a decent mud tire it was pretty capable.

Have you ever owned/drove anything other than American? I can not believe how bad the American cars/trucks have gotten over the years, the lack of quality and attention to detail is alarming. Now I'm all for keeping the American economy going, but you cant tell me these guys cant build a car to last more than 5 years with no problems? yeah right. If anyone other than the major 3 sold a pickup diesel I'd be all over it, but they dont, so I will continue to drive my F-250, which I do enjoy.

^^^he's got a point! honestly i would never go with another S10 or any IFS truck for that matter for a lifted truck.

this thing has been hell since i bought it. i have replaced the headlights, driveshaft, rear brakes twice!, and the previous owner has made a MESS of the wiring! I have managed to fix almost everything and turn it into what i haev wanted but next time i'm goin for something with a solid front axle. I'm tempted to spend the $2,000 and do a SFA swap but the truck is already costing me money no need to spend more

so my answer is if you want a Fire Road off-roader go for it! but if you want a serious trail rig/rock/mud get a full size or a jeep

and coming from an owner the v6 isnt slow but it isnt mind blowing. they avarage about 125(clapped out)-150 HP stock. I have a custom exhaust, hypertech tuner, and a few other things to help turn the bigger tires though

That truck is tits....but its so weird that 8 inches of lift and you can only get 33s under there. I didn't know the s10s were so small.

I have an s10 blazer. And it is complete garbage. Its the worst vehicle I've ever drove. Ain't very fast, handles like ****, has so much body roll that It feels like I'm gonna flip in every turn. Something goes wrong in once a week. Oh and its built like garbage. I'd rather be in my moms VW Beetle. The beetle feels like a Benz compared to the Blazer.

I had a 99 S-10 ZR2 Automatic. It had 110,000 on it when I traded for my Titan. I replaced a water pump, both wheel bearing/hub assemblies, a U-Joint, axle bearing/seal. It went through THREE "Air Pumps"---emissions garbage.

It was fun to drive. I owned it for about 2 years. Couldn't be happier switching to my Nissan though.

I now have a full size, crew cab truck that gets nearly the same gas mileage as that wimpy V6 mid-size extended cab!!

These are the only pics. The M/T Baja Claws did their job on this occasion!

Exactly! I had a 97 STX ranger 4x4, and I loved it. Sure I sunk a lot of money into it, but nothing major ever went wrong with it, and it never once left me stranded anywhere, I wadded it through mud, trees rocks, anything! It was a solid platform and I knew that buying it. The TTB front end, though it ate tires and balljoints was rock solid and still fully capable offroad. Power out of the 4.0 V6 OHV wasn't mind blowing by any means, and with a few simple mods actually felt less powerful. Kept the stock intake and it was great. I avgd 16.5 mpg for the most part with mixed driving. I used it going between home and college on the thruway, never ever let me down. I now drive a 400+hp and 700+tq at the wheels truck and get roughly the same mileage with more than twice the weight. Pretty funny.

Its not the brakes! Read the post. Its the fact that the truck is very light. When you try to stop and traction conditions are less than perfect, the wieght of the trailer will push the truck alot easier than the wieght of a full size.
