Hi All,

I have a 06 LTR 450 with a Cherry Bomb, Yoshi System and Pro-Tec air box lid fitted as performance mods on the engine. I installed a CP 13.75 - 1 Piston but I found it burned massive quantites of oil straight away and had to take it out again and re-install the original pistion. Since this it has been burning oil (approx half a litre each track day) and puffs out blue smoke under hard acceleration.
I am also looking a upgrading my suspension and am considering FOX shocks with KOQ A-Arms which seem to come in a reasonably priced package on E-Bay for the full kit including rear linkage.
My questions are -
Does anyone know why my bike is burning oil?
What are the best engine mods to increase performance? Cams, Piston etc
Is a Flexx bar or similar worth investing in?
What is the best suspension to go for? (MX and forest trail riding)
All feedback gratefully recieved and appreciated.

did you install the piston rings properly? did you get your cylinder re-honed?

The rings were inserted properly
I did'nt hone the cylinder

You should have gotten your cylinder honed and miked afterwards. Are you sure the piston is for an LTR. Cause if its the cylinder it should burn oil w/ a stock piston in it.

My CP burned oil when I first put it in, but once I put a few hours on it and broke it in the oil burning and blue smoke went away.

It is still burning oil now with the original piston back in it... Must be the cylinder at this stage!
The thing is, it never burned oil before the day I put the CP piston in??

Thanks for the advice guys

yes they are, and you cant go wrong with the fox shocks, just wondering, why did you go with such a high compression pistion? on offense just wondering and are you now running race fuel?

I went for that piston because it was the only one I saw available. I'm back to the standard piston now, so no race fuel!!

That is the same piston that yoshimura uses so it shouldn't be that.

Its when u measure the inside diameter of the cylinder.

CP has certain specs you have to set the ring gap too before you install the piston. That could have caused your smoking problem and now the cylinder is probably the culprit. And you don't hone an aluminum cylinder you have it repaired or buy a new one. The stock LTR cylinder coating isn't that great and it tends to wear rather quickly. CP makes great pistons and are used by a bunch of top notch motor builders so I wouldn't blame the piston. But anything is possible!

you know thats funny, my piston smokes like a mo fo and my engine builder said its normal with a single ring piston... i never see it on any other bikes @ the races though. is there any way to stop it, furthermore, is this the truth in regards to his explanation, or is something else probably messed up which im not being told about?

It should not smoke, these aren't two strokes! lol! If it's smoking something is wrong and it sounds like you need to change engine builders.
