Too Good to pass up?

Hey guys.....i sold my blaster a few weeks back, gpt 900 for it, woot! well, ive been looking for quads and theyre all way too expensive for my shallow pockets...:p One of my cousins said today during dinner that he had a buddy who had an 01 or 02 yamaha rappy 660....he wants 1400 for it, i know, its not gouing to be a showroom conditn beauty, but i tihnk i could do it some good, he said it might need a new pipe, he said a bracket broke or something, BUT christmas is only right around the corner. Ive been riding forever but only got serious 2 years ago...and i could aford the rappy if i pull 5 outa my bank, whichll cut my drivers ed funds a lil low, but l;ike i said b4, christmas is right around the corner...my dad is a lifelong gearhead and ive been tinkiering with stuff forver, so the cobnditon of the bike doesnt worry me TOO much, but, im not sure if im ready fora rappy, i dont wanna die....but i know my limits, just becus its a 600 engine, doesnt mean i have to use all 600 of it...but still, i tihnk it might be a little too much for myself, what do you guys think, im kind of a conservative rider. but you never know whatll happen with a large engine under you...

if i could get some pics ill show you then, my cousin said it was the white to black fade scheme...

Well I'm not a big fan of raptors at all but for that price if it's in good shape why not. 660 doesn't mean anything. You can handle it if you know your limits. Most 450's can beat out 660 and 700's in a drag so you should be fine IMO.;)

get it as long as its been maintained and runs goood and drives goood btw if its a 2001 it will have a remote reservoir for the shock

i think the 01's or 02's have real bad tranny problems

I would definitely NOT buy it if its an 01. That was Yamahas "oops" child. Stay away! Transmission problems, starter problems, the list goes on. RUN AWAY! My local dealership wont even take 01 raptors in on trade, no matter how nice they look.

Ya any new models usually are oopses LOL. If it's an 02 get it. Like I said I don't like raptors. :o :tired:

Ive beat every 450 I've lined up next to on my dads 700. All it has is a HMF full system, K&N filter and the TFI module. Maybe everyone up there that has a 700 just cant ride it worth a damn.:blah:

get a bike their cheaper and if u want a quad u can find some sick deals on 400ex's ranging from 1200-2000 and raptors are crap imo

Raptors arent crap. And many 01's were brought to the shop on recall letters yamaha sent out. Polak, im sorry, but your an idiot. Youve never even rode a raptor have you?

They will walk all over a 400ex all day, and this is coming from somone who has ridden both and currently has an extremely modified 440ex (engine built by sparks).

you can buy new trannys for em, they are like 700 bucks, if you do it yourself, i wouldnt buy it if i was you, you can come across great deals on other bikes, soon one will come along

I think what your talking about is the 2nd-5th override tranny from alba?

That gets rid of first gear, and I think the gears are straight cut...which is basically a drag only setup.

^^thats what i was hoping this one was...a deal too good to pass up, but u guys know ALOT more than me so ill take your words for it, ill leave it be, and i DONT want a honda...i admit, theyre nice bikes, ive ridden 2 different 400ex, a 250ex, a 300ex, and a 250x and theyre all decent bikes, but persoanlly too many people have them and i dont want what alot of other people have....which is why ive ALWAYS loved the BAnshees, but looking at them, they look like larger blasters, i mean i love them to death, but a little too primitive for me..:ermm: i want my dads z400 lol, but itll be years b4 he passes it down to me:devil:

I know, with a few simple suspension mods, they can be competitive in almost any form of racing. They have so much torque. The 700's really dont even need suspension work. If you can ride it, then it'll clear any jump and get though/over any obstacle you throw at it.

Ya SUSPENSION is the most important thing if you're racing IMO. And if your just regular riding too. XC skid plates are the most but then suspension.;)

Yes, the 01 Raptors had some bad trannys. I had an 01, never had any probs with it. And to dispute what another poster said about shops not taking 01 Raptors on trade... BS! I traded my 01 last year for my LT-R450. I got 2k for it. Yes, I may have gotten more by selling it outright, but probably not much more. btw... The 01 Raptor also had some probs with the starter gear. Again, I never had probs with mine. Take the quad for a ride, see how it runs. From starting to stopping. Shift through all gears. Look the thing over good. Take a non-biased person to look it over with you. Sometimes when you are excited to get something, you don't look it over very good. A knowledgable person will help you with this. The Rappy 660 is a fun quad, and if it's in good shape, $1400 is a good price. ;)

totally agree. Test ride it and see how it is. Most of the 01's that had problems were taken back and fixed on recall. I say go for it.:cool:

So you're calling BS on me on my shop that I go to, and you've never been to? My local dealership WILL NOT take 01 raptors in trade. Anyone who has been in the quad industry knows the 01 raptors were very problematic. Transmissions being the big thing.

A good friend of mine sold an 01 raptor about 8 months ago, the transmission was still working on it and he had all he could do to sell it for $800.

My opinions come from first hand experience with raptors, I've had three friends that owned them. Two of them were 01's that was bone stock, one an 02 that was heavily modded. I was not a fan of any. The raptor felt exactly like the 400EX in every dimension except more power (not that much more though) and a lot more tippy.

The raptor 700's are a completely different machine and I think its unfair to base your opinions on the 660 if you've only ridden 700's

My buddy just bought a 01 raptor 660 for $1500. It worked great for about a 3 weeks and then all hell broke loose. It has major tranny problems, he will have to buy a new tranny. And the starter is junk on it now. I would only buy a 01 if it already has the tranny upgrade. If you want to know more go to Raptorforums.com. My answer is NO, stay away from the 01

I watch all types of racing and Raptors stand out the most in GNCC and Ice racing. They have tons of torque and good suspension, don't know why people have to make a big deal about it.

the 01's are unrealiable tippy and just hear all bad things about them all the time so idc wut you all say and those are my reasons why i dont like raptors

Do you only dislike the 660's, or do you dislike all the raptor's? And BTW...a 660 and the 400ex have nowhere NEAR the same geometry, or frame design. The ergo's are space totally different.

And to the person who asked about the recall. Just google for "Yamaha Raptor Recall". They sent us alot of stuff for the 01 we had. We never had the first problem out of it though.

We sold it in 04 I think, my dad got another banshee, then traded it for my 400. Now he has the 700R and it hasnt gave us one single problem.

only the older 660's i think the raptor 250 will dominate the youth class and the 250 looks good also but its really small which kinda sux it feels smaller then a blaster

Polak...here are some pics of my '03 and let me know what you honestly think. The 01's did have their issues, yet any 1st year production quad has them...look at all the issues the first Z400s had. I liked my Raptor stock but like modifying things so went all out on mine. I think it handles pretty damn good...

NPelletier...I say go check out that '01. If its a POS, pass on it. If it's nice, take it for a spin...
