So I bought this 300ex from a guy who melted the piston. After searching for a reasonably priced 300cc motor for weeks with no luck, I came across a guy who was selling a '95 CBR600F3 motor locally. At $250, about half of what the cheapest running 300s were going for, I couldn't resist. Now I've got quite the project to keep me occupied this winter. Enjoy the pics. Target completion date is 1/1/2008, but it should be running/driving much sooner than that.

I'll keep you guys posted on my progress, and if anyone needs any parts from a 300ex, I'm selling a White Brothers pipe, .050 piston with jug, and just about anything in the motor you can think of, except for the crank, that one didn't make it.

you need to make som lower frame rails you realy weekend the frame but looks good

oh i know, the motor is so big that i have to build the frame around it though, so I first need to fit the rear motor mounts and then i'll know where i can run the rails..exhaust clearance won't be easy either

What kind of Whitebrothers is it. Pics prices. Would you be interested in a trade for a raptor rear shock?

looks like a real death machine to me haha gonna be scary fast you might want to invest in a very very long swingarm

yeah i can't wait to get it going, I'm just going to have one of the welding shops by my house extend my stock swingarm about 8 inches until I can afford a legit aftermarket one. Anyone ever worked with the vacuum lines on a CBR F3? I'm not sure what I need to keep and what can be plugged.

if that is the angle you mount the motor how are you going to keep gas in the float bowls on the carb ??

I don't think the carbs will have any problems. The front will be a little bit higher, and in the end, it will be only a few degrees off from the CBR factory mount angles, as seen in the pic, and yes, i know that one is on its stand, but it still shouldn't be a problem:

I talked to a guy with a CBR 600, F2 i think banshee and we ended up racing an deven with a +7 swinger he could stand it straight up with no trouble

ahh man that's amazing. I can't wait to get this build moving. I'm currently waiting for the 520 sprocket to ship so I can align the motor with the axle.

so your putting a 520 front sprocket on the cbr engine? the guy I talked to was running a 530 Im pretty sure, he got his rear sprocket off of some machinery in canada or something he said, looked like a 50 something tooth, and he was complaining of always stretching chains. maybe after you get the 520 setup and the bike running you should then check ito a 530 sprocket for the axle so you can run a beefier chain someday. not sure if he was just trying to show off, or maybe just over exagerating, so who knows how bad the problem really is. you shoud posty lots of pics cuz after Im finished with my current build, I got a 04 daytona 600 with only 2100 miles on it sitting in my carport that needs to go into a quad. probably a 450 frame though so I have more room to cram it all into. nevere even considered it into my 250x frame, but looks like your getting it.

Yeah the 520 conversion on older cooter scooters is very common, and also the easiest/cheapest route for me. The only difference between a 520 and 530 chain is the width, so i don't foresee any serious problems. Also, 300ex chains are cheaper than the 530 chains that come on CBR's, and I would think they're more suited for sand, water, etc. Lastly, I would just change the sprocket on the motor because it's much easier to find 300ex rear sprockets for when you decide to change the size. My stock 300ex rear sprocket is so small that it'll help me keep the front end down when I first ride it, but also put the top speed well above the 120+ range. :eek2:

That daytona will be sweet, I would go with a chassis from a banshee if I could do this over again. The radiator is already mounted, and the frames a little wider/roomier. Plus I don't think you have to cut it, based on the bike in this vid: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=2860659
The price was right on both the 300ex, and the CBR motor, so I'm up for the challenge.

Don't worry, I will be posting a huge tutorial when it's finished, complete with lots of pictures, diagrams, and videos. Hell, I might even post templates of parts that need to be fabbed.

yeah, I agree on the price/ease part of it. I found a 520 front for my engine for pretty cheap a while back. I looked at them a long time ago but I was pretty sure the 530 just looked beefier every which way you looked at it. but it was a while ago, disassembled the bike start of 06 I think and havent seen the chain since.

and I was thinking of a banshee, because of the reasons you stated, but to me the banshee easily has one of the ugliest sets of plastics ever put on a atv. I was thinking of goinf with a raptor cuz ive seen a R1 in a raptor and it didnt look too cramped. but when I get off a YFZ and get onto a raptor, I just dont like it, its too big of a bike, I like the smaller bikes so i can throw em around easier. I dont plan on making mine a straight line quad. I mean sure it wouild be nice to have it be extended a foot and be able to floor it in first gear. I just plan on maybe 2 or 3 over at max, +2 arms and gearing tall enough to where if I floored it in first gear it will lift no problem, but not so much that its unridable, which will give me gearing to go way too fast but I just wont do it. the guy with the banshee had another bike, but I dont wanna have to choose before I go out "what do I want to do today, just go fast in a straight line, or be able to ride the trails with everyone else and not be able to race if I come across something fast?)

so I figure Ill build something thats not quite as fast as it could be, but would still waste most any atv out there with a oem engine still under the plastics, could probably do 90-100 no sweat if I was crazy enough, and can still go through the traisl with my buddies. Im sure someone somewhere will have an insane banshee though that will take it since it wont be stretched.

one thing I thougt though. it would be sweet to set up something small like that 300 frame, stuff a bike engien in it, set it up for flat track and hope turf tamers could get some traction and go in the open class.

by the way still planning on riding it by the first of the year? how far are you now?

I hear what you're saying about liking the smaller bike. I'm only 5'6" 160 so I don't want anything much bigger than what I have. And without having to cut the frame and do custom work, it just wouldn't be as much of a project/accomplishment to me. As far as the swingarm, I'm going to keep it stock at first while I figure out where I can even ride this thing. I plan on hitting the trails with it, but I don't know how creekworthy the CBR motor will be, and the ground clearance is going to be a slight issue with it. Eventually I'll extend it some, but I don't really want to take it past +6 because I don't want to just go straight either. Out here in IL, there's mostly flat fields to ride in, so it will be fun to fly through all 6 gears with WOT.

As far as progress, I got the sprocket today and mounted it, so tomorrow I begin the tedious cutting to fit the lower rear mount of the motor, then I'm off in search of some decent steel to make the lower frame rails and other mounts out of. I'm taking night classes at the local ju-co and we had company for thanksgiving, so the project has been on hold, but I'm looking for some decent progress throughout the rest of the week. After that, all of the papers, exams, and other crap will stall it until early december, but then i have almost 3 weeks of uninterrupted shop time, so it will still be ready for my new years eve burnout. :chinese: And yes, I will be filming it.

I havent gotten my current rar setup done yet, just have to figure out a bolt situation for the shock to frame, and shock to linkage. but I got a 450r swingarm/axle on my 250x frame, and it is definately longer, way lighter, and the 450 axle looks as wide as the 300 axle with wheel spacers. think I got the swingarm/carrier/brake stay/axle/linkage and 250r rear shock for less than a few hundred bucks peicing it all together. still wouldnt keep close to a hundred horses on the ground though.

you hooking up a cluster out of a old cbr for engine temp/rpm etc?

I still got the computer and cluster out of my bike so I can monitor all that. too bad the speedo isnt going to work. I dont even remember if its driven by a wheel or by the tranny? if its driven by the tranny I could just gear the quad to have the same overall final ratio and then the speedo would be close.

Yeah I found a guide showing how to hook a CBR F4i cluster up to my motor, so that will look badass with the LCD speed and temp gauge. I think the speedo sensor for mine is in the tranny, so if I really care, I'll get a "speedohealer" and adjust it until it matches the speed on my GPS. Eventually I will get some projector fog lights for a car and run dual xenons on the front for the night riding...bling. But that's a ways off, I have a lot more fab to worry about if I ever want to make it that far
