View Full Version : DRX90 okay on the trails?

We are looking at getting a DRX 90 for our 8 year old to use for casual MX racing. My son is getting out of bikes (KTM 50 LC Senior class) and is itching to move to quads.

I would like the DRX90 to be able to run trails and dunes, as we well as MX.

Do any of you here do this with your DRR's? How did they fare when things slowed down on the trails? Any cooling issues or air fliter location problems?

Quad Junkie has already been a huge help with this decision on another forum but I thought I would post here and ask other DRR owners about thier experiences with the DRR away from the track. :)

Thanks all.

All we run is Harescrambles and trails with ours.
The water is the biggest issue, but with a little rider training and some creative uses of plastic bottles its not a problem.
We never had any heat up issues.
Since you are talking a bout some mx, I would go with the DRR.
If you were strictly trails I would suggest a 4 stroker that is bullet proof.

we originally purchased our drr 50 & 90 for trail riding. we just happened to get involved in racing. we do a lot of trail riding down here in the heat of s.florida and we've had no problems with overheating...

Awesome trail quad, wider then most for stability!

i would definatly recommend the DRR over the other "big names" out there due to the width (stability) and power (won't out grow as fast=easier to "justify" to mom!) and it is comparable $$ to the others (also easier for justification!)
And, even though "non racers" may have never heard of DRR, they are not an "off brand" There are plenty of dealers around and parts are readily available. Probably EASIER to get then the "big brands"

The Xtreme is a great quad for trails because you can lug it all day long as it is a 4-stroke and is also very adept at MX. You should check out www.xtrememotorco.com and see what they have.

we have the 44 inch wide and trail riding sometimes my son gets trapped between trees that i can go between without any problems, we also have a honda trx 90 and if trail riding is what you are after there is nothing better than the trx, but on the track the drr is where its at

thanks for the helpful reply's guys.

I think we will be doing 50% track, 20% trail and 30% dunes with the DRR.

We really like the bike and our local DRR dealer Extreme Mini Quads NW.

I just wanted to make sure the DRR isn't like his KTM 50 SX LC on the trails... that little bike can't be ridden at slow speeds or it just over heats.

I appreciate the help. :)

Have many of you needed to replace the suspension right away? I'm concerned about the shock quality on the quad.

You may want to get an air cooled version unless your pilot can be aware of the temp light.

Stock shocks are good, but not great...

Even the big 4 shocks get yanked right away from for any serious riding... (like my TRX450R)...

Fox has some new stuff that is probably ready to ship any second...

We have sold a bunch of Elka's w/o any complaints at all.

Good luck....

Make sure to give Les a hard time....He likes it!! :) :)

Looks like we are going with the DRR and it will be under the tree on Christmas morning. YES! Les and John and NW Mini Quads are great to deal with. :D

Are the long travel shocks worth the expense? The STD travel Elka's seem reasonable, but when you factor in the new a-arms and new swingarm it gets a little pricey. He is a jumping fool on his MX bike and I want him to have good suspension but the cost is brutal.

Has anyone here gone STD travel and wished they had just ponied up the rest and gone long travel? My son is aggressive and the bike will be ridden fast.

We want a sporty little duner/MX bike that can do some trail work and not be too out of sorts.
I found alot of full on race bikes used but thought they might be too hard edged for trails and fun riding. I'd rather have a soft edge MX quad for him, if that makes sense. I think that's was we finally found.

Good lookin DRR. Simple and clean. You are the first one to cut the old frt purch off when adding the nerfs. We reccomend it but no one wants to do it. Looks better that way.

It wasn't me that did that clean work, it was the shop but I agree that they know how to set up a nice clean little mini.

The shocks are the same cost std vs long travel

the additional cost comes with the swingarm and a-arms

If budget is "not" a concern and you have a heavy or very aggressive rider then for safety purposes go with the long travel set up.

I don't think it is 100% neccessary, but if I was offered a choice I would prefer more/better suspension everytime

we bought the standard travel elkas, and my son is a big kid, 11 years old 5 ft tall size 10 shoe and around 150 and he loves the elkas, the way he can stand on the gas when other riders have to wo up is cool, even in the turns he can keep on the throttle and gain alot of time

Maniac, made a good choice he is soon to be a proud owner of a DRR 90. I think your pics help make the push towards the DRR.

He will post pic soon Im sure:D

Glenn,

Which size bike is your son riding? Is he on a DRR 90? How long do you think the 90 will last him?

Our son is 8 1/2 and I'm hoping the 90 will last him untill he's 12ish.

Thanks for the feedback on the Elka's. I agree they will make a huge improvement. I want to see how he starts jumping before I spend all of the money on the long travel a-arms and swingarm to accomodate the long travel shocks. I have no doubt that the LT setup will be better in all ways, I just want to make sure that we *need* the suspension to be that much better before taking the plunge.

300maniac,

Post some pics of the new quad! Congrats! :)

we bought the DRX 90 in june of this year, and he hopefully will be on it at least through 08, i think with age comes more confidence and strength to handle the quad better, and a better understanding of when to lay back and when to go for it, we have kids 13 and 1 girl who is 15 run some of our races and they are tough to beat, and they all ride 90 cc class , the quad might not have as much zip with an older rider , but there experience will win every time, so i would not be in any kind of hurry to make a move to a bigger quad, unless it is something that the whole family agrees up on, because they might not be the fastest right now , but they are getting that valuable experience that will only make them more confident and of course faster and safer,That is just my 2 cents worth.

my opinion only is, if you are going to race the drr alot and plan on running in national events, then the added expense of the different A- arms and a longer swingarm is something needed to be competetive, but if you only race local tracks (like we do ) and the drr is mostly used for fun on the trails and the half a dozen times you race during the year the standard travel shocks will work great, my son has launched his drr several times with the elkas and he is yet do really bottom them out, but everyone has different ideas about why they want the elkas, and mine was about the safety for him, more than being able to jump a small building in a single bounce (LOL)
