I recently purchased a set of scoops from Crowley Off road. the whole process was great and the communication was excellent. I received the the scoops in a timely manner and was impressed with the service. The scoops are made of aluminium and at first seem flimsy. I didn't like the metal look so I decided to paint mine black to match my bike better. The scoops did not include instructions on how to mount them but anyone with half a brain cell can figure it out pretty quickly. After mounting them up the fit was perfect and very secure. I had looked at other scoops and choose these because of the way they fit the contour of the top of the fender. They are well designed and fit to channel the most air possible toward the engine and oil cooler. I would highly recommend these scoops to anyone looking to improve the performance of their bike. Here are a few pics of the scoops after painting and on the bike. You'll also notice my extra tool box tucked up under the front hood. Gotta have the extra space to store my junk...

Thanks
D.

i wonder if those scoops stick out if you have cut fenders?

Sportrax 400EX

If you look at pic number 3 (The front on shot) you can see they will stick out some....if the fenders are cut along the contour like most people do.

I totally agree. After riding for about 30 mins I noticed more heat blowing past my legs. The scoops seem to be doing their job.

Anybody got pix of the tinners?

Let me knwo how those hold up to mud and flexing of the fenders. If the fender mount doesn't tear, the scoops will bend. Tinner has got one of the best setups out their. He makes them for cut fenders or full fenders. Been a race season on mine with no problems and all kinds of compliments. Besides Jim Geraci is a part of this site (TINNER) Give him a ring or drop a line. He is a great guy to deal with.

PS He has got a new design out, the pic is of the original style I will get a new one up ASAP.

First of all, this thread sounds like an advertisement more than an inocent test. Thats ok though.

From my experience with the scoops, they wont cool the motor on its own, although it doesnt hurt. Ive added air scoups, oil tank and wrapped the header in exhaust wrap. Ive seen a average temp drop of 15 degrees with alll of those mods.

I say, the more cooling mods you can afford/handle, the better. I considered an aftermarket oil cooler. Im waiting for someone to come out with a larger REPLACEMENT cooler before investing in one.

I hope you enjoyed my 2 cts. :D

Just to be clear here. I just bought these scoops. I have never spoken to or delt with Crowley Off road before. I got no kick back or discount on the scoops either. I as a consumer was impressed with the service and the product and felt it would be nice to share my experience. I know that Tinner and others make scoops and don't think any less of theirs. I just liked the design of these because they fit the fender better and looked better in my opinion. I don't have cut fenders nor do i race my quad. I didn't need "the best" thing out there and looks are important to me. I'm not trying to promote the scoops or sell anything here. I have seen posts about the Tinner scoops and nobody said anything to them about promoting anything in those threads or accused them of trying to advertise for someone. What is the big deal if I compliment someone on something they sold me and "Show off" a mod i put on my bike.

Ranger 400Ex:

Do you know what the cost is going to be on the new design Tinner's, and if they are set higher up to channel more air to the oil cooler? The big factor with me buying the Crowley's was that the Tinner ones look to be set to low to effectively channel the most amount of air to the oil cooler.

Thanks for the info.

Forgive me bud, I wasnt bashing you. Actually, now that I know that its not an advertisement, Im very impressed. Nice work on creating the thread. The pics are outstanding.

Hey, what kind of paint did you use? Let us know if it ever starts to chip off.

No prob.....it's early....maybe it's just me being cranky. :)

I first sanded down the whole scoop to make sure it was scored up pretty good so the paint would stick better. Then I did a coat of primer. The finish coat is a gloss automotive trim paint. I figured it would hold up well. I'll be taking the bike out this Sunday for some all day hard core riding and jumping. We'll see how the paint....and the scoops hold up. I'll be sure to post my findings...good or bad. :)

thanks

they are only a couple bucks more. Jim is eating alot of time cost to keep his scoops affordable. I do admit to advertising for Jim because he is part of this site, has a great product, and will work with any problems that arise. I worked with him on the new setup and am helping him get his airboxes up and rolling. Nothing wrong at all with patting someone on the back. This is what the ATV industry needs is more people communicating with vendors on the goods and bads(in a professional manner) of their products and services, and not just for racing/sponsership but for everyone.

And no Jim does not just send his stuff for me to advertise. I am making the labeling for the scoops and working on pics for his website that will be up shortly. I am more of a R&D rider, or as some have put it a "Thrasher"

A few people have sent me PM's asking how I mounted the extra OEM tool box under the hood. Here is a close up shot of the mounts. I got the bolts (stainless to prevent rust) and the spacers at Home Depot. also to answer another members question. No it does not get in the way of the wire harnesses and nothing had to be relocated to mount it there. Just make sure after you drill the holes in the frame to mount it to use some kind of touch up paint around the holes to prevent rust on the frame

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Any word on if they are set higher to get more air flow to the oil cooler? Looking forward to some pics. :)

What kind of airboxes is Crowley coming out with??

I'd love to see an air box that has the battery inside but still sealed up to prevent water getting in. :)

i still dont understand why everyone wants a battery in the box? Whats it gonna do? The way i look at it, unless u put each individual wire in its own seperate hole, tahts the only way u can COMPLETELY seal a aibox with the battery in it.

in the stock position on a 400ex for the battery, the subframe will bend under the weight of the battery, moving it under the seat...

A: it is not as exposed to the elements
B: it moves the wieght under the seat, takin weight off teh side, resulting in less bent subframes
C: alum airboxes look cool

How much is this Tinner Airbox going to cost? Will it come complete with a Sealed Lid and be able to use the Snorkel?

No not at all, If you need more of different angles or anything let me know.

As an update....I went riding last weekend for about 6 hours. Some pretty hard core trails and we hit a few big jumps. The scoops held up great with no problems.

Does that Box have inreased volume, does it have an area for the water and air to seperate? Look at the PJRacing Airbox ,It has all that plus alittle, and it only runs $140 plus freight to you. See ExtremeRacer167 He will hook you up with one

I'll try to get more pics of it tonight for you. And yea I have the old tool box still. I needed more room for my tire inflator/patch kit and some wrenches so I added the one up front to hold them. :)

Hey Sportrax 400EX-- I agree with you totally about the looks and fitment on the Crowley Scoops!! The look is the exact reason I bought them. I also think that they will flow more air to the oil cooler too. I just wish I would have gotten some stickers with them.

I actually just walked in the house from installing mine on my 400!!

Keep up the good work Crowley!!!:D
