What would you say is the weight limit for a rider for a 400ex?

Im 175 lbs.

Haha your fine. The factory recommends 243. I'm over 250 and I haven't had a problem. It pulls me around and still moves out fine.

Well guys I'm 230 and my complainte is the suspenssion. I ride trails and I got no room for error with the stock shocks. The just dont like me I guess.

It is a 2006 with like new shocks(well when I got it)

WHere are your pre-loads set? Have you cranked them up?

pre load? I did not know they were adjustable. I'll have to take a good look tonight. And how should I adjust them, do I turn them in or out. Do i want more travel or less. I'm guessing less.

The front shocks have a multi-step preload adjustment using a stepped cam to set the spring force. Turning the cam in the direction to shorten the spring at rest will increase spring tension and reduce the tendency to bottom out for us heavier riders.

The rear shock has a threaded collar that allows similar adjustment to spring tension. Tighten it down on the spring to increase preload and reduce the tendency to bottom out.

At 6'3" and 250, I tend to sit back aways and put more load on the rear than on the front. I have found the most comfortable ride by setting my front springs to almost minimum preload and the rear to just a little tighter than middle of the threads.

Good Luck!

Im 6'4" around #270. got my fronts cranked up. Figured im heavier than factory max wght. id need to bottom 'em out. Never thought about how far back I sit. Maybe I should try lowering the front preload a bit. Thanks for the tip Qdmaniac

Yeah, I was wondering why the ride and steering was so harsh, until I realized that I sat back so far. After moving the front pre-loads to near their minimum load positon, the ride is now a dream, and although I don't exactly hit 150' triple jumps, I ride hard enough to verify that I'm not bottoming out.

Well i lowered the front preload last night but it was raining too hard to try it out. Just took it for a spin tonite and wow-- it does ride much smoother- front not bouncing around anymore. much more rideable through the whoops and washboard gas roads i ride all the time.
Thanks again for the idea!!

You are welcome. Sometimes the creedo "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" just doesn't apply!
