I'd actually say wait until the 09's come out because yamaha is supposed to be completely re doing the yfz. So if you can wait until then and see how it turns out...But if your more like me you probly dont want to wait and id say get the 08 LT-R because it has all the updates and is supposed to be alot better than the already great 06 and 07

if you are going to build the motor don't go with the yfz. you will always be working on the motor:(

but now i have a ltr and they are much better than the yfz

I own both, and for the motor, deff the yfz. I have motor work on my and it is super reliable. Yamaha four stroke motors are some of the best as far as maintainence and power go. As for handling, the LTR stock takes it easily.

If your looking to buy soon and race I would go LTR. When it comes to the engine I have heard horror stories with YFZs siezing or taking the crank and thats even with just bolt on mods. The early YFZs seemed be ticking time bombs when modded considerably (internal motor mods).....A couple years ago, I was at a race and a guy had put his 470 kitted YFZ on a mobile dyno that was there and it grenaded there on the spot! Though the new ones have the oil jet mod from factory now and have made the cranks/wrist pin area stronger along with ridding away the other bugs like the draining battery syndrome.
The LTR motorwise is pretty reliable stock or modded. I have heard of a handful of odd things going bad on them. The major things have heard are the shift pins breaking out the case and the trannies giving a false neutral every now and then. The '06 I had did it maybe 4-5 times in the almost 2 years I had it, which makes me think I didn't give it a solid shift with my foot maybe.

The LTRs frame is pretty stout too need no gussets.

Both machines can be made into some sweet rides.

get the o8 ltr. had a 05 yfz, ridden it three times, motor blew up. Friends 05 same problem but he's running at higher comp. My brother's got the 06 ltr with HMF, PCIII and ProDesign filter, and got his black ltr 3 weeks ago, only with cherrybomb and it pulls the hell out of the 06 and stefans modded yfz.
