starting in second gear

we are beginners at atvs, we have a stock 400 ex, what gear do start in for racing, will it hurt the transmission or engine if you start it in 2nd gear??? thanks riles

No it won't hurt it, I start every race in second.

I've had my 400 since 11-98 and have started MANY sand drags in second and still am running the OEM clutch. And yes I hammer it and if you are asking the total flat and hillshooting drags number well over 100, and no I didn't win every one. Ha.Ha.

Yehh 2nd gear is fine to start in, I try to start in 2nd and first maybe on black top. Just depends sometimes.

2nd is just fine, i do it sometimes on my 1991 250x and it hasn't hurt the oem clutch for 11 years now, that's normally when my dad and i drag race, he has a warrior and with the 90 pound weight diff from him to me i hold him through all gears, till i get to the top of 5th gear and he enters 6th, then he has the advantage, but if we switch bikes i wouldn't even call it a race, more like a b*tch slap to my 250x

I start out in 2nd gear always, if I do hook up in 1st gear when I go for the holeshot I wheelie, or I just spin em' and then waste time shifting and getting my body positioned right. I almost never use 1st.

hey everbody, thanks for all the coments, i did not believe my son when he told me you can start in second gear. we mainly trail ride so i still think he can start in 1st. thanks riles

i start all my races in 2nd gear. but i always spin, i thought about tryin 3rd gear starts. my one friend does it on a R. but i have recently switch gears so i should be fine with 2nd gear. i have the mods in my signature and still on the stock clutch with no problems.

About how much do you need to rev you bike when you start in second gear it seems when I start in second I get a little hesitation then it goes!!!
