i bought a hpd 48mm powermaxx carb, i was going to install it on the 440ex project. well i just got it in the mail yesterday and it is huge. i think it is just too large in size for the 400ex. i would have to raise the gas tank to make it fit. so that is out. i also recently bought my brothers 2005 troy lee predator, i think i will slap that carb on the predator.

after my long winded story, my question is will the 400ex benifit greatly from a 42mm carb like the 450r carb or any another 42mm or is the stock carb still good in the built 440 department. i had a 450r carb before and tried it out on the predator and it was a great carb. if you guys say that is the only way to go i will try one again.

I personally like my 39mm fcr. Ive never tried a 450 carb so cant really give my opinion on that.

my brother has one of those 39mm fcr carbs on his 2005 yz450f and it is an awsome carb. i might see if i can find one for cheap. the 440ex i am building is just a project for fun i will ride it a little but then i will either put it up for sale or sell it to a friend that runs a bike shop. i am trying to keep the price of the build down so i am just wondering if keeping the stock carb will limit preformance badly. i really do want to see just how fast i can make a 400ex go before i stroke it. so allthough i want to stay under budget i also don't want to limit performance in any one area after dumping $1,200 into that would be just stupid.

Well if that is the case I would get a 450 carb off ebay or something. It should be better than the stock, and the newer 450 carbs are almost the same as the fcr.

wow a 48mm. that is huge. i hear alot of people say the 450r carb and the edelbrock eichner 440 series are pretty killer for the 440 bb kits.

I have had both the FCR and the 450R carb. I think the FCR is a fine carb, just hard to dial in right. With the FCR I had a flat low end and it stumbled when you whacked the throttle open at low RPMs. When I put the 450R carb it solved all my issues!!! And it was cheaper.

I believe the FCR will probably make more top end HP, but for my riding, I wanted low end performance.
