My buddy was tellling me I could put a swingarm from a 450r on my 400ex cause I was looking for a +1 1/4 and noticed a lot of 450r swingers for sale. He said they bolt right up and to be honest I want to make sure he is right before I go doing anything. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

04 and 05 450 swingers are the same length. They said the 06 and up 450r swingarms are about an inch longer. Skid plate wont work, chain slider is different, and the brake line attaches differently. Other than that, they're pretty much the same.

Thanks for the info! I am trying to find an aftermarket one used on here and that will prove to be much help.

The width of the rear bearing carrier is different. 400ex is 6 1/4" and 450r is 6 1/8".

So by what you are saying i could make an 06 450r swinger work on an 07 400ex if i have the following parts.

06 450r swingarm obviously
06 450r skid plate
06 450r carrier and bearings (or can i reuse my 07 400 bearings
in the 450 carrier)
06 450r chain slider
06 450r brake line

I would seem to think the linkage and geometery would be way off???

Anyone care to comment on the geometry and linkage. Anyone done this yet?

I'm pretty sure your going to want to go with a 06-07 swinger... and 06-07 link... and 06-07 rear shock... any year 450r carrier... any year 450r brake stay... any year 450r rear caliper... any year 450r axle.. any year 450r axle nut.. any year 450r caliper... and then you should be good....

It sounds to me after buying all those parts you would almost have as much as a used aftermarket ex swing-arm.

you can make it work but you have to grnd a bit and use all parts from the 450. carrier, brake hub, etc.. i know because i have done it.

was it worth the extra inch?

If you use the 450r rear end on a 400ex then you would have to use the 450r shock and linkage...I would think.

nah not really worth it. but i had a 450r shock on the quad anyway. then i blew another motor and got rid of the bike and got a 450r

Does anyone know why you need the 450 brakes?

because the 450r brake hub doesnt work with the 400ex caliper

is the brake rotor smaller or does the whole brake hub not fit the axle. I know that the brake stay is about a half an inch closer to the axle on a 450r, because I bought a RAD tapered carrier and they sent me a 450r stay. I had to take my stock stay and grind out the center to fit on the new carrier, so I think that as long as the brake hub will fit on the axle I should be able to use my stock brakes
