Hey im looking to shorten my exhaust and was wondering how to do it. I kno there are a million threads about this but my case is slightly different.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t227/BlaineKaiser450/Pictures10-14-06143.jpg

I want to cut it at the base of the can if that is possible. (instead of the end) Ill get a better pic of it later but would anyone know how to help me with this? thanks

drill out the rivets at the base

take apart the muffler

cut the can and the inner core to desired length

re-pack muffler

drill new holes for the new pop-rivets

put all back together

and your muffler is shorter

Yes its still done the exact same way except take it apart at the base, not the end.

i might jus be stupid but what exactly does shortenin the exhaust do as far as horsepower and sound wise....
i think i heard tht shortenin it would make it louder..but i dunno

It will definatly make it a louder bike in general and usually it does better in prformance.

Usually it does nothing for performance, just makes it louder.

Ive heard of some people doing it just because the pipe was too long to tip the bike back onto the grab bar and work on/clean the bottom side.

cosmetic and sound purposes only.
if a short can gave the most power, every company would be making one.

thats not true, because sound is the reason why [every] company does not do it

Looks???? lol

A short can will always result in a more top end biased pipe.

Look at all drag pipes and see how short they are. I know my dasa pipe is 4" shorter and my top end did like the diffrence in pipe...

My pipe was also cut at the base to help with a cleaner look.

dude, wtf?
you laugh at me saying it's cut for looks.
then you go on to say, you cut yours for a cleaner look. how much top end did you gain with that "cleaner look"?

where do you get that I cut it for looks? WTF... I said it was cut at the BASE!!!! for looks... I didn't want the cuts to be made at the end cap just in case the cut wasn't perfect!

How much did I gain? Well thats hard to tell but based on what drag pipes are and how they work Im sure it helped some...

But to say cut just for looks is just plain ridiculous....

So next thing you gonna say that bikes with extended swing arms have them for looks? or people with long travel suspensions have them for looks? Honestly sometimes when people don't know instead of trying to get there post count up ... learn what your talking about instead of just repeating what another said the day before...

a short can is a top end ... makes the overall length of the exhaust shorter.....

here to make it easy on you I will give you some examples... and tell me what they have in common....

Yes short can, more lower end power..

Just like the pro circuit and fmf power core SHortys( for SX and woods racing)

Sounds like you need to stop trying to get your post count up by "pretending" to be mister exhaust engineer. And, take a chill pill while your at it.

As far as me trying to get my post count up, that's ridiculous. I don't play those 2nd grader games.

it looks to me, that all of those quads have their exhaust shortened or relocated to allow clearance for the long swing arms. that's what it looks like to me.

Reminds me why stopped coming here years ago..........

See you out in the desert!

Why don't you just stay in the desert. Since, you're too cool for this site, with your little short exhaust.

You know what they say.....
short exhaust = short ?

Dude,
If you're getting a deal on one for sponsorship, I'm sure it will work out for you. Have them send you one and try it out...on the dyno or track. I've never heard of them, but if I was getting one for free or at a greatly reduced rate, i'd have one.

FMF dose offer a shorter exaust for the CRF and claimes to make more low end. With a slight loss on top end. But hell the 450r has a ton of low end anyway.

I think the only people running Weapon MX exhaust are the guys that get "sponsorships" on SponsorHouse!

About chopping the exhaust....I only have experience with it on the Dasa on the dyno and was sworn to secrecy with the info! lol
