I just started my yfz, and realised after about a minute my header was glowing near the exhaust port? can anyone shed some light on this topic?

As long as it don't glow past the 1st 4 or 5 inches off the header
your fine, if it runs the complete length of the header u need to
do some jetting. every yfz i have had does from the head to 1st
bend in the pipe.

The day i bought mine, it was already dark outside, and we had it running(for a test drive) and the yamaha guy said that it was normal. I have seen it a few other times, and i'm stock but normaly i think that its too light outside to see it.

yfzrider45, with the cold weather you need to fatten up your jetting. And yes the glowing is normal.

its probably because your valves weren't adjusted to the weather yet. after a motor gets warmed up the valves seat near perfect. from what i hear the titanium valves play a big roll in it making them seat differently in different weather conditions. it goes something like that. :blah:

hey guys i rode my yfz today in teh snow and it got red like all the way where my boots are....about a foot from the einge where it starts.....is this bad?

exrider12
12-07-2007, 08:19 PM
^^^ thats bad! you need to do some rejetting because of the change in temperature. just guessing but raise the main jet 1 or 2 sizes

Ryan Plaugher
12-07-2007, 09:20 PM
i will second that, dont ride it anymore without a rejet.

I'm probably not going to touch it until the spring again....It wont do this is the warm weather will it?? becasue i never saw this before......or is this a sign that i need to change the jetting no matter what the condition? thanks

if it was jetted right, and in the summer it never glowed that bad then it should be ok. you could try to stick the airbox lid back on, that will help out alot if you are set on riding.

Put the airbox lid on to try???? or just put it on for over the winter???

Ryan Plaugher

if you realy want to ride you can stick the lid on and see if that helps for the cold weather riding.

I have an outerwear for my airfilter...should i put that on as well??? i'm gunna try these this sat. if it only glows a little bit would that be fine to ride like that? or is it still not good AT ALL...

Ryan Plaugher

just as long as the glow isnt past the water pump hose you should be ok. and an outerwear wouldnt hurt anything. also what exhaust are you running, if you can put the quiet core and spark arrestor back in. this will also help.

I have a Full duncan racing exhaust (fatboy4)...

Very good exhaust but i dont think they make a quiet core for that exhaust, but i could be wrong.

I tried with the airbox lid on and it didnt go red as much as before!...I am def. just not gunna ride/start it during the winter....When the weather warms gets close to warm i'll take the carb out, clean it, get a new k&n airfilter and then ride it liek that...It wont be wrecked if i keep all the stuff in there during the winter right??

if your not going to ride your quad durring the winter here are a few things to do:

check coolant leval and make sure it is at the proper 50/50 mix

drain fuel out of tank and carberator

make sure oil is at the right level

never leave the quad just set there all winter, dump some fuel in every couple weeks and start the engine and get a little heat in it, then drain out what fuel is left. starting the engine will keep the moisture out of the engine and keeps the cyclinder walls lubricated and rust free.

this is not necessary but if you want stick the big on a stand or a 5 gallon bucket so the suspension is unloaded. this keeps the suspension from sagging out over time.

You brought up an old post but it's a waste of money running race gas when all you need to do is richen the jetting.

Less restriction in the pipe overtime leads to a lean condition in the engine causing the headpipe to glow more:) . Good idea though for mufflers with a lot of time on them. Should always keep up on your packing to maintain optimum performance.
