the intake valves are very soft and pull through the head. they will tighten up after just a few rides, causing the bike to be hard to start, maybe not starting at all. they need to be constanly adjsuted pretty much and replaces often. the kibble white springs and valves solve that problem

don't listen to them about the valves...

i had a 2005 crf250 that i beat up pretty good and had 0 problems with... very few have valve problems...

go with the crf or the rmz... both are badass bikes!

You can't go wrong with any bike. All of them are hairs apart.
My Choices:

#1 Suzuki RMZ 250
#2 Honda CRF
#3 Kawaski KXF
#4 Yamaha YZF
#5 KTM SXF

Like I said though, all of them are very close.
Just my 0.02

i've ridden them all extensively and i would say the ktm 250sxf is my favorite...come spring time a new ktm 530 xcw will be sitting in my garage.

The yzf250 is one of the best out there, i have one and have tried the others, they just don't really compare. YAMAHA all the way. No problems whatsoever

yea don't worry about the Honda valves, thats not as prevalent problem as some believe.

My brothers friend has the new crf250 its badass. He hasn't had any problems and he races it.

The Hondas are good but the reality is they do eat valves and the dual exhaust exits are a gimmick. Most exhaust shootouts I've seen have singles producing more power. Who would spend 1100 on exhaust for that thing? The Yamahas are good overall. They come with the best suspension off the floor. The Suzuki is pretty good too but their suspension settings off the floor are usually a lil soft. The RmZs handle the best though. The Kawi, well I have never dealt with one......

how can u possibly say a no link rear end can compete with the other top 4 bikes... the ktm is junk with over priced parts... try payin the bills to keep the thing running! also ur gonna pay more for it up front... not to mention the ugly styling it has!

u really can't go wrong with the crf, yzf, rmz, or kfx... choose a color honestly... just stay away from ktm...

I like the 08 Kawasakis. They seem to be pretty damn fast.

ok ima bike guy so let me explain this my crf when i got it before the motor was redone was very good to me for about a year of beating they dont eat valves, these guys are all quad guys so there jus saying what other quad guys said. the hondas are actully pretty reliable just take care of it (oil changes, filter, valve adjustments, etc) and it will take care of you

for the 08s i say get the kxf that is a nicee bike very smooth but usable powerband

unlike my very ballsy R.E.P motor crf (ported head, custom grind cam, hi. comp piston, hinson 8 plate, ti. valves and springs, they did the carb, full yoshi ti. exhaust) this just wants to rip your arms out lol

stay away from the yami's all my buddys that ride them regret it seem to not like to be ridden that hard IMO ofcorse ,and we have had numerous yzfs just locking up at work at the track.

the zukis are alright i feel the motors are weak but again i ride a full race bike and now also a 07kxf450 but it just seems to not pull like the others it does corner good but just dosent have the power i like

the ktms are alright if i rode in the woods i'd deff be on a katoom but the track no. they just hop around corners and dont feel as fast as the others

my buddys dad just got a 08 crf and all i can say is wow very nice looking bike all black he already switched the pipes tho. the dual is wayy overated and is proven not to make as much power as a single but still a very competive bike for a stock bike.

so i say go with either the kawi or honda both will be sickk.

srry for such a long post but i hope i helped

I'm not worried about the dual exhausts making more or less power im sure the bikes are fast enough coming off a 250ex ... besides it looks cool

The only thing about the dual exhausts, is that...its more weight, and will ost more to get an aftermarket system...

I agree with the guy that said just pick your color. The dirtbikes nowadays are so similar. Just find one that you like the look of and feel. None of the engines will let you down.

The CRFs with dual exhaust, do they havev 2 exhaust ports like the 400ex, or is it one header that splits into 2 pipes?

And with the bike, I'd buy which ever one you can get the best deal on.

As stated quite a few times before, the crf's do tend to have valve problems. As for the dual exhaust, yah it's cool until you want to go aftermarket. I know you're looking for new bikes BUT, if you do go the route of a used one the 06 yzf's tended to have clutch problems. I believe it was their clutch baskets. For the yzf 05 was probably the best year besides 08. I've ridden the new 08 and the 13.5:1 piston works wonders. Honestly, you cannot go wrong with either a yzf, kxf, or rmz. If I were to buy one those are the three I would choose from. The sxf's are very nice, but around here there is only one ktm dealer (cernics) and that's it, so you're kinda limited to dealers. Too bad the 08 rmz 250 didn't have FI. I believe the 450 will.

Just from my personal experience with the 250f's that I have raced/ridden in the past here is what I would buy first.
1)08 yz250f
2)08 rm250z
3)08 kxf250
4)08 sxf250
5)08 crf250

The first three are all great choices and it was honestly hard to pick the spots for them. I have just seen/heard/experienced too many problems with the crf's to buy one.

you actually want to adjust them every 15-20 hours. They go out of spec quicker than what you'd think lol.

As for the crf150r vs. the kx 100, I dunno. Surprisingly the kx 100 doesn't make all that much more power than an 85. I honestly think it'd be a good race. 100's IMO are overrated. They're an oversized 85, and in some cases 85's are faster than them.

I had an 02' Crf450(notorious for eating valves) with over 75hrs on it and only had to adjust the valves once. It has ALOT to do with changing your motor oil and servicing your airfilter OFTEN!

Z400's are notorious for eating valves too and I have 200+ hrs on mine and have not had to adjust my valves yet! Its all about preventative maintnance. ;)

consider yourself lucky... seriously. People in general don't realize that these bikes need more maintence. They are not xr400's that will run forever. Checking valves every 15-20 hours should be regular and I believe the oem manuals state something very similar to that. Fresh oil can never hurt, but neither can catching a valve that is out of spec.

honda is definately the way to go!!!

Screw KTM. Excellent motor but I don't like the suspension. No rear linkage. I love my friends 06 KX. The thing hauls with only a slip on yoshi and a high compression piston. And the Factory Connection suspension is sweet!!!
