Ok I just had my motor rebuilt completely redone the top end gaskets bored to a 406 and I was wondering how I should break it in. Just drive it like normal but not too wicked? And how long do I have to take it easy on my motor? Thanks

go thru a couple heat cycles atleast (starting motor and holding at high idle until its warm and let it cool down completly) then ride it no more than 1/4 throttle for like 10-15 min and let cool down and then the next time a little more throttle and let it cool so on till u have like a tank thru it. i went pretty easy on mine till like 2-3 tanks thru it but others will tell u different ways. theres soo many different ways people will tell u and i'm no expert but this is what i did

Two schools of thought on this, I have found if you break it in like you plan on riding it, it will be faster. I hope you installed heavy duty studs on that rebuild, otherwise you will blow head gaskets.

heavy duty studs on a 406????? i got a 406 10:1 with never a problem. ive heard of hd studs on some 416's and 426's with 12:1. never w 406 tho.

The compression ratio has alot more to do with the need to use HD studs than the cylinder bore.

I dont think they put heavy duty studs in there I know it isnt a real high compression because I told him I still wanted to run pump gas. So Ive road about a whole tank in it and its done fine. Ive been lettin it warm up and then just ridin it, not full out but about 1/2 3/4 throttle. But do I really need those heavy duty studs?

You might not, I had a 10.8-1 piston in mine. It did pull the studs out though. At this point just go ride it. Worst case it pulls a stud and blows a head gasket. If that does happen replace the studs then.

Break it in the same way you will ride it. Just give it a sufficient amount of time to cool down. I have never had to break anything in but this is what I hear is best.

My friends dad is a motorcycle mechanic and he said these words of wisdom....You can ride it but dont rev the motor to red line because the rings have to seat. He also said that it'll take about 3 hours to break in properly. Thats a matter of opinion though, people do things differently. Some people throw it together and ride like they stole it.
