I use Amsoil motorcycle oil which is designed for the wet clutch. In the winter I run 5w-30 and during the summer anywhere from 10w-40 to 20w-50 depending on how hot it's going to be.

I've run Amsoil since I got it and I'm very satisfied with it. Doesn't burn a single drop of oil and it still shifts and runs like brand new. The oil seems to hold up very well also as whenever I change my oil it's never discolored.

Welcome to the Yamaha club, you should enjoy it!

$30? Where do you get your oil? I only spend $7.99 a quart at two quarts and then $4 or so for an oil filter. $20 oil change and I know it's getting the job done. Yamalube Semi Synthetic is good oil though but at the Yamaha dealerships I've been too they're all overpriced.

i get it at a local ktm shop in town they sell it by the quart for 10.95 so im guessing thats over priced?

Honda needs no much maintenance, but on your new yfz you will spend some money only in motor an mantenience, but you will be happy with the results, here in argentina the 5 best racers ride for yamaha, and the trade has a winner in the 5 categories.good like

The 450R needs just as much maintenance as the YFZ.
My YFZ has needed just oil changes (I run Amsoil) and the valves are still in spec after 2 1/2 years. I also make sure to keep the oil screen in the oil tank clean as I think that's the major problem with the YFZ's not getting enough oil.
