hey i think my rod bearing is starting to go out but im not sure so if you guys could tell me some signs so i can be sure that would be nice and if you could also tell me how hard they are to replace and about how much it would cost that would help

in all honesty its hard to tell unless you tear the bike appart. its not like its gonna let you know right before it goes that its bad. if you are going to tear into the motor, you can usually check for play when you remove the top end and piston. see how much if any side to side play there is as well as latteral movement. if you are gonna tear the motor appart, use a clymers manual to check the tolerances once you get there.

ive got a rattle in there when the rpms get up and this is what some of my friends suggested when they heard it and they know a lot more about this stuff than i do but i figured id ask you guys what you thought

I just bought a 400ex so I don't have a lot of experience with these motors but according to the Clymer manual sometimes the decompresser gets "stuck" and that can cause a rattling noise. Cheaper and easier to check that before tearing into an engine rebuild you might or might not need.
