hey man have fun with the winter makeover. last year i did my girlfriends quad and it was a total blast. first quad i ever tore completely down. it really paid off when it won april's qotm for blingstar. we had every part torn off that thing and all the bolts were in a labled flat style tackle box with dividers, which really made it easy to put it back together. here are some before and after pics

rebuilding is probably one of my favorite parts of quad riding. there is nothing better than tearing down something thats used looking and giving it a fresh look. ive done mine and i recently rebuilt my brothers. heres a pic of it in the works. keep us updated on yours! i love these threads.

stock reds but theres some silver maier race cuts in the mail. we found some front plastics, now we just need to find the rears.

honda_runner

I might be on a budget, but Im not cheap when it comes to buyin parts. Im gonna go with a stock look, so im gonna use 2007 red 400ex plastics. All I need to do is weld 2 tabs in the front of the frame.

I put 07 plastic on my 2000 and didn't have to do any welding. But i guess you could I just drilled 2 holes like the 07 has it mounted. Also save your money and headaches on the aftermarket air box. Stock is the best!

only thing i worrie about is the whole wiring harnest
i dont wanna mess that up

Ruby Soho
12-11-2007, 05:54 PM
the wiring harness is easy, just label each end of the cable that you unplug that way you can match them back up and your set. a manual will have a wiring diagram too, thats a plus.

btw your build is coming along great!

well if the jetting is wreong youll notice it soon.. just dont run it long if its jetted wrong.

my buddy ran his unjetted mojave for like 2 months, nothing happened im suprised

i find actually reattaching the wiring harness the hardest. not actually plugging everything in, but the zip ties and such haha. the best advice i can give is to take a lot of pictures from different viewpoints of anything you think could confuse you while reassembling. pictures of how to route the wires will be your best friend.

I would recommend guseseting thr frame while it is apart. I had broke a frame near the upper shocks mounts. If the quad is going to see a lot of air or the MX track, it would be a great investment. My 2 cents.

u know, i was thinking about it, but it wasn't in the plans to gusset the frame, and at this point I don't have the time to do it, plus im gonna be doing a lot of woods riding, noting crazy, I don't do MX.

here are the 2 brackets i had to weld to the frame to make the conversion, as of now, the frame is in process of getting powdercoated. And i know its taking forever but the holiday season kinda slowed this build down.

Im planning on finishing this around end of March '08 if everything goes good. :)

How much did it cost to sandblast the frame if you dont mind me asking? did you take it to a body shop or something? keep up the good work. im with ruby on the oil tank I like the black and red together. btw Ruby have you got to ride your quad much since you got her all done...pleased?

How much did it cost to sandblast the frame if you dont mind me asking? did you take it to a body shop or something? keep up the good work. im with ruby on the oil tank I like the black and red together. btw Ruby have you got to ride your quad much since you got her all done...pleased?

Thanx! I guess I do have paitience.. LOKO Performance Powedercoating sand blasted the frame, and powdercoated it, along with the swingarm, motor head, and 4 misc parts, all for five bills. For the price, they did an outstanding job!

I would like black on the oil tank but i hate how black shows all the dirt so im still debating.....thanx for the input guys

I love the Taco! with rear locking diffs, it goes through a lot! Toyota put a real nice suspension on it (TRD edition). Its also the Crew cab i think its called, where the rear door open the opposite way. I don't use 4wd on the street, not neccesary. and I don't haul anything with it... yet! haha

I can probably get away with just zip tieing the brackets to the frame, but im gonna make it a little more durable than that.

Another thing is that I gotta drip a hole for the (back) bracket on the airbox, not a big deal, but the right side of the airbox is touching the frame, which will eventually create rust in that spot on the frame.... i gotta move the airbox over somehow...

They call what we ride for a reason. ATV.. whats that mean, you ask?! All Terrain Vehicle.. well whats that mean.. It can go on all types of terrain, like through woods (where a car can't go) up hills (where a car can't go) Through mud (where a car cant go) Over bumps (where a car cant go) get my point? If a cop is chassing me, there is not a 1/1,000,000 chance that I will stop. Its called an ATV, therefore I will use every part of it. lol

down here in Florida man they have helicopters out like crazy. Someone robs a store or breaks out of jail or runs from the cops there will be a helicopter on you so quick its crazy. Just today i saw a helicpter fly over me chasing a guy who robbed a store. Oh and theres another thing called the "SWIFT MUD" which if you are riding on land not yours they are out there chasing you in F150's and they DO call ahead to have police waiting for you. Cops down here dont mess around with anything. I've only know 2 people that have outran the cops/helicopter. On quads or street bikes they have gotten away a few times. And if you think about they wont catch you at night, down here they use infared so theres no hiding yourself or especially something with an engine thats hot. My friend ran so many times he knew that there was a light that goes on, on the helicopter and thats when their using infared. But he ran risking his life if he had too because he would have gone to jail for some other things. He managed running from the law for 3 years before getting caught and put in the slammer.

austin20, maybe in your small town they won't send helicopters. To cops its not a matter of how much money they are losing to get you. If that were true, using your logic, they wouldn't even have cop cars out because they are "losing" money. I love people who talk about running from cops. Just wait, you will get caught, and you will lose your quad, and lots of money. Maybe not today, or this year, do it enough and they will get you. But back to the AWESOME build. Can't wait for more pictures.

I didn't put on the stock locknut yet, since I don't have a big enough tool for it. The stock is a crappy design, I usually agree with Honda on a lot of their engineering, but not in this case...

G-Force makes a 2 piece special wrench set to fit the stock axle and brake rotor nuts. The wrench set costs around $19.00 at www.rockymountainatv.com

Rad-Loc anti-fade axle nuts are some of the least expensive and best ways to prevent the nut from coming loose. I've had one now for 6 months and I think it's fantastic.

It has threads on it and it replaces the stock axle nut. It's a pinch nut. You tighten it by hand and than tighten the 2 allen screws. Those 2 screws pinch the nut together. Here's picture of mine.

Im using the stock swithes.. just like the stock brakelight.. this one will just stay on, and its not hooked up to any controls like brakes, just the switch on the handlebars.

Since that like takes the same amperage and volatage.. it will be functional.

I was hookin up the wire harness.. and i think i have a problem with my relay... The motor cranked a couple times.. then now it won't do anything.. My battery is good.

Once I turn the key, the neutral light kinda flickers.. so i called a local dealer and they told me a relay would cost me $67!!! i was like omg!!!

Why is the relay so expensive???

You know... idk anymore! I have powercoat everywhere of course and i grounded to the subframe... and im sure the ground doesn't make it through the bolts to the main frame... so idk.. im sick of wires..

Tomarrow im gonna take a meter to the starter relay.. and then i'll know for sure.

Pipeless416
10-19-2008, 08:42 PM
theres your problem. take a wire brush or something and just brush off the coating right where the ground goes. that was my problem and mine was just painted.. no thick powdercoat. :)

Ruby Soho
10-19-2008, 09:17 PM
all i did was smudge the powdercoat where i bolted my ground do alittle bit. which is right on the subframe.

Could you please take afew pictures of the plastics sitting on the frame? I really need to see what the color scheme looks like.. looking wonderful! Wires arn't any biggy at all, if you have an ohmes meter! (Veryy nice to have!) Well, I absolutly can't wait for the finshed product! Just wondering how much longer do you think it will take for it to be done?

Because I couldn't find aftermarket plastics that kept the headlight and fenders... It was always.. headlights, and cut fenders.. or fenders and no headlights..
