theres a drain plug on the bottom of the oil tank in front of yor motor. this drains part of it, but not all. good luck on gettin that motor plug fixed up

is that ok to take off the one on the bottom of the oil resivoir?

yes, that is the one to take off to drain your oil...there is also one on the bottom of the motor that needs taken out to drain the oil in the motor also. i am assuming when you say you broke one on the SIDE, you are referring to one of the ones that cover the oil filter? i am assuming this because there are no drain bolts on the side of a 400ex, just the 2 that hold the oil filter cover on. you will need a new oil filter as it needs changed every time the oil is changed...

Think again, theres are drain bolt with a 12mm head right by your shifter in the case side ways. Thats how you would you drain the oil from the transmission/lower end.

yep you are right...my bad...my 400ex don't really get used much any more...so it has been wayyy tooo long since i have needed to change the oil

i would use synthetic but the price now a days is around $8.75 a quart! vs regular oil thats like $4. Synthetic you still have to change as often, it just dosen't break down or put any wear on your internals, it also makes you rev quicker and run cooler.
