Is a xr 400 side cover just like the 400ex except for the kick starter hole if that s it I can plug it with something and run the hinson quik change cover and its alot cheaper that way rather than buying it from hinson or having them convert it. They want like $ 410. to convert it it would be about half that if you used the xr400 side cover.

yes they r the same except for the hole, just need to get something machined to go in there and get a clutch cover.

Yes they are the same. See if you can get a freeze plug that will fit the hole.

No you can't just bolt it up. You have to do some other mods in order to pull that off. There was talk about it before but im not sure if anyone has done it.

ex 80 where did u get the plug? if u made it, r u willing to sell the plugs? ive been wanting to do this, but dont know how about to get a plug?

dan, i dont think that u can put the kick starter on unless u get crafty, cuz that hole is lined up to where the rear brake pedal is. but if u can figure out how to go around this, u will need all the internal gears, plus u will need to get an extended kicker-shaft. but if u do find a way around the brake, its gonna cost a pretty penny.

I made it, You have to shrink it in with liquid nitrogen. If you want one i'd sell you one for $25 shipped to you. I am assuming all the case covers are all the some sizes so i'd make it the same size i amde mine. I am thinking about getting the inside welded, but i am not sure yet.

I see i always make spelling mistakes after i get done typing, I am sure you can figure out what i mean :)

Thanks, where did you find it at?

ex 80 is there any other way to get it in? cuz i dont have access to liquid nitrogen.

EX 80
11-06-2002, 06:51 PM
I saw the proce of $140 in the k and k catalog.

I'll have to make another plug some time and leave it in the freezer for an extended period of time to see how much it shrinks. I think a freezer is like 25 degrees and liquid nitrogen is something crazy like 320 degrees below Zero.

When i get a chance i'll make another plug and see what happens. Give me a PM saturday or something to remind me.

ex80, i would put to welds on the corners on the inside, you might a have a problem whrn it gets hot with expansion, since one peice is billet and the other is cast, you might even want to run a bead around the entire inside.

Are you going to run the hinson basket cover? or the stock xr basket cover?

do you have to run the hinson? i heard you do, is this true and why

hello yes good question can you put the complete cover assy on the 400ex from the xr400 i mean the whole thing not the hinson part, just so you could work on the clutch easyer by the way i am a heliarc welder aluminum got a machine at my house just a thought maybe trade out work or somthing if its good quality aluminum i can weld it!

EX 80

I heard that the XR clutch cover willNOT work, the hinson one will. I don't know why, but thats what someone told me.

Extremeracer167

Its the same engine. Of course it will work. the only thing hinson does is mills down the cover. either that or replaces it with a XR400 cover.....who knows. i think i might get this done...it looks COOL!!:D

EX80. I would polish your side case.

ok heres my question. If u look on the post about the longer fins on the cylinder from Xrs only. They show the clutch going into the case on the left side. Now on the EX they go in on the right side. Wouldnt that mean that the clutch cover wouldnt have the hole for the ex? wait.......nvm im a dumb***** i think the hole is on the case itself......my bad!:blah

Extremeracer167
11-11-2002, 12:05 PM
nvm i was right. Or is the pic from XRs only a 600?

My buddy just got his in from Hinson its nothing but a xr400 cover it has a aluminum plug in it that looks just like ex 80's post, I also saw one at the races this weekend and it was from Hinson and it was identical and the guy who had it on his quad said leaks oil too.

EX 80
11-11-2002, 09:22 PM
where was it leaking from? the removable part?

11-11-2002, 09:45 PM

$122 for the side plate and $48 for the cover - new from servicehonda.

From the removable part, leaks a little oil he may not have tight or it may need ao ring Im not sure how it seals.

KAWSAM62
11-12-2002, 06:43 AM
so if i understand correctly the side clutch cover large piece is a stock xr400 and hinson puts there own removable cover on the the place that actualy covers the cutch assy without taking off the large cover and that would also mean the factory clutch cover small would not work from a xr400?

Evan

can someone explain to me where the clutch arm goes on that thing?

Any one still looking to do this mods i have something to tell you. Hinson found out alot of people were doing this so they raised the price of the Hinson replacement plate. It used to be $140 now its $215. I know some places still advertise it for $140 but they just have not updated thier price. I just got mine yesterday. Still cheaper than buy the entire thing from hinson.

So Ex80. Have you installed your cover yet?

Can ya get some pictures.

O yeah and Evan. I wanna know where the clutch arm goes too. I was trying to figure that out too.

Extremeracer167
12-03-2002, 01:28 PM
it goes in the same place as the stock side cover. Look on hinsons website. It isnt like on an R where its just a flat cover. It looks the same as the stock, except it is removable.

Heres a pic
