list everything that the bike has done to it. does it run fine anything above idle? does it stutter, miss, etc when you punch it or under load? it may be as simple as an idle adjustment..... be specific on the symptoms.

runs fine above idle, when it idles, it varies from no idle to about maybe 10 seconds, its fine otherwise,

I don't know alot about these motors. But I went outside and cranked mine up. If the choke is left on it dies, might be that simple.

take the choke out of the carb and swap in a 42 pilot jet, i live in wisonsin cold as fu** in the winter, i still do not need a choke. plus it help w/ throttle response. there is a write up in the how 2 section.

in my experience with 400ex's, the carb "choke" kinda sucks. You cant just put the choke on and walk away to let it warm up. most of the time you have to sit there and keep it running. Im comparing this to say a yamaha warrior style carb, or even a kehin fcr, with an on/off type choke. Maybe thats the nature of these carbs or theres a trick out there msot of us do not know. i tired fooling around with jetting, which made no difference.

IMO ,the stock 400ex choke is poopy???

hey guys im the friend mentioned in the initial post. i just replaced the spark plug (cheap and easy) didnt do anything. the idle adjustment connecting cable thing is broken so i used a pair of vise-grips to turn it where it connects to the carb, still wont idle. i will probably clean the carb this weekend. thanks for the help.
