I have a 2006 trx250ex right now but i am looking for some more power. I usually do trail riding but sometimes go up to travis pastranas house to hit some jumps.(You dont have to believe me if you dont want to) What would be the best overall?

i heard that 450's are worse on trails than 400's.....is this true? if so why?

10-26-2007, 08:16 PM
idk y someone would say that if they were worse woudlnt the pro's use 400's? rather than as u said the worse 450's

yeah thats true....not to sure about the bigger bore racing fourwheelers though.....most of the guys i ride with are utility jukies so i dont know too much

well i'm pretty new into the race quad world so im starting out with a 400 and then moving on to a 450 or a big bore eventually (if i even do)

I would suggest just starting with the 450, you'll regret it if you start on the 400 trust me ;) jmo

it all depends on how you maintain it.

i have both..and i will say that i liked my 400ex much better at first...at least until i spent lots of money on the r.

it needed the suspension revalved. it was way too stiff and just never felt like i had as much control over it because the ride height was way too high.
the other thing i had to add was a full exhaust. the 450r likes to be in the high rpms. this is ok if you can go fast all the time, but sometimes i was with people on utes and the dang thing took a lot of clutch and throttle work. so much that even though i have been running a clutch for nearly 20 years, i would stall the bike 8-10 times(at least) on a 4 hour ride with these guys.

the racers can get away with it because they are running balls out the whole time

I would never get something just because the pro's use it. The pro's run whatever they're handed, it's free!

I personally would rather have a 400EX for trail riding. I never was comfortable on the 450R, felt too tall to me (tippy but not tippy, weird right?) and the brakes were way too touchy. I almost did an endo on went grass!

If you just plan on doing a lot of trail riding and no "serious" riding/racing I would look into a nice cheap 400. I would also look at either the newer 400EX's or the Z/KFX/DX400 for the liquid cooling and reverse.

I completely agree. I've never seen a professional ATV trail rider. If you're only going to ride trails a 400ex would be the best. Comfortable, decent handling and suspension, and better fuel mileage than the R's.

Except for power, I can smoke (out-handle) 450R's on the trail with my EX

400ex.

yea but if u have a 450 and u decide u would like to race u would have a chance now with a 400 not so much

450R has better power and suspension.
400EX has better fit and feel + better handling

400ex w/ 450r front shocks In my oppinion they do not need revalved like every on will tel you, just adjusted to a lighter preload on the springs and lighter dampening.

Thanks, i think im gonna go with the 400ex....anything better about the brand new ones compared to the like 2004's besides redesigned plastics?

I would deffinatly get the 450.. I had my 400ex for two years then I got the 450, and for a year I owned both and never had the erge to 400ex in the trails. Needless to say the 450 got about 200 hours in a year and the 400ex got about 10.

I believe they added reverse at one point. Other than that it's just plastics. I would try and find a good deal on an older model if reverse isn't needed (which it really isn't).

Another way to look at this is if you're looking to get a car. You drive in the city and rarely ever make it out onto a highway. You're looking for either a comfortable car that gets decent mileage in the city or a more expensive sports car that is only for fast paced driving without any money dumped into it. The 400ex is the comfortable car with decent mileage and the 450R is the expensive sports car that needs modifications to be a slow riding comfortable ride.

I owned a 400ex for the past 3 years and pretty much all i do is trail riding. jsut got my 450r a few months back. Night and day difference. 450 all the way. i look back now and dont know how i even rode the 400 all this time. the 450 is just so much more powerful, snappier and better handling.

I owned a Banshee and a 400EX for awhile before I switched over to a YFZ450 and I ride mostly trails with a little MX here and there. Of course it's a night and day difference between the 400 and the 450. The power is definitely, definitely a lot snappier and the suspension has a lot more potential. However, for trails, I feel nothing beats the 400EX. Unless you plan on racing XC I don't feel the 450's are justified if all you're doing is trail riding.

i would go with the ex, i like it way better for trails than my ltr. plus its cheaper if your mainly riding trails.
