I love them, I want one really bad. They are so much fun to take on a graval road and powerslide all the corners. You gotta climb around on them like a monkey in a tree to get them to turn. Good Fun:D

My buddy has one of the first ones that came out. Air cooled.

Its modded real decent. You would be surprised.. its about equal with a stock Raptor. One year at Silver Lake it Seized up about 6 times. We would either take the head off and sand the rings, or occasionally it would just cool and unstick its self.. it was pretty funny.

here it is at the strip..

My trike is not nearly as tricked out as Chris's, but that is not the way I want my bike. I bought it about a month ago with still the original tires with chalklines and knobs on the sides. This is the way I intend on keeping it, just like it was in a timecapsule from 1986 :D

cool.........but when i bought mine it was in such bad shape.....the only thing that remains from the original bike is the rear brake pedal........yep even the frame was bent to h3ll so i replaced it...

i like the way the 86 years had the forks 1" foward some day i will have an 86 and leave it stock also;)

stock is no fun

The ONLY reason why it is being left stock is there are not many trikes left out there that are like this.

Most have either found their way to the junkyard, have been thrashed, or are modified sand draggers. Original examples are getting very hard to come by. If it were in any less condition it would be lookin like Chris's beauty in no time :D

for the most part i agree with 2000ex. the 250r is already a nice machine and doesn't really need to be tricked up. i would like to find one that really doesn't need anything. but that will probably be hard to find.

yeah......a bit of $$,$$$.......and it is hard to decide which one to ride really:D ;)

but when i do.........it is a blast!!!!!

nothing like hitting some bumps and having the rear end skip around like a dirt bike all the while throwing roost:eek:

That must be awesome, could you take that motor and put in a 250R frame if you wanted to? Were the 85 ATC250R motors liquid cooled?

XC250R
11-06-2002, 10:32 AM
Yes the '85 and '86 trikes were liquid cooled, and yes they will bolt right in a TRX.

Live2Ride300
11-06-2002, 10:33 AM
Nice, are they basically the same engine?

XC250R
11-06-2002, 10:35 AM
Yep.

Live2Ride300
11-06-2002, 10:37 AM
Do they have the same rear end as the TRX's? Is the swingarm axle, all that stuff the same? The same as the 86-87 model trx's, because they changed the length in 88-89?

XC250R
11-06-2002, 10:43 AM
That doesn't matter ...88 and 89 were made as part of the frame and the 86 and 87 used an attachment between the swingarm pivot bolts for the rear motor mount. The cases are identical, with minor upgrades through the years to internal parts. I would like to find an old $800 trike myself for a parts bike.

I have seen people use the swingarms and axles on the quads, not sure how many mods are involved....though I believe they are minimal.

Thats cool, I get my drivers liscense soon, so I gotta fix my car, but after that, I want to buy a 250R or build one from the ground up this spring. It would probably be alot cheaper to just buy one that is already modded w/ suspension and a good motor. Building one would cost alot, unless I got some really good deals on parts.

The '85 swingarm is different than the '86. The bearing carrier is smaller OD, and the brake mounts are different.

Here is a pic of my '85

.125 overbore, FMF pipe, Mikuni carb

My '86 with ESR pipe, Fat Boy silencer, '85 swingarm and brakes, renthal bars, Lonestar axle carrier, PRM swingarm skid.

These, err... this is the one I ride.
