my 400ex is blowing smoke out the muffler and i dont know what to do please help me

You need to do a better job describing the problem if you hope to get good advice on what it might take to fix the problem.

1) When does it smoke? (Start up, throttling up, or all the time)

2) What color is the smoke? (Black, White, or Blue)

3) Current mods and jetting?

4) Valve adjusted correctly? If so, when?

5) Any recent maintainance done to the quad?

it happends when throttling up and its white smoke i havent touched any thing in the motor no mods yet

White smoke is ok....well, better than the other 2 colors

white smoke is ok? iv always gone by if its white/grey then needs new rings and a fresh hone if caught soon enough. butt if not then could need to be bored or re-sleeved.

what coolant do you run in a 400ex? i really dont kno that answer didnt kno they had coolant (pretty sure they are air cooled butt i do kno they have a oil cooler but that all has to do with oil)

I kno when mine was blowing white/grey it was the rings.

compression check, valve clearence check, and if it still blows smoke most probubly your oil seals on your valves

WHAT YEAR! older motor could just be the valve guides, valves out of adjustment will also make smoke, then when the engine has warmed up it will clear up. my2cents...

its a 2002
